Hello ,

i have recently downloaded Spiceworks , looks great .

but when i run a network scan on the LAN , it just dicovers my computer .

it finds few other things but names them as " unknown"

what should i do to discover all the devices ,

to test on one computer i opened the port which i was running this , but no help .

Any help would be greatly appreciated

2 Spice ups

You will need to start by opening these ports on each computer. Not the port on which you are running SpiceWorks.

  • ICMPv4 Inbound and Outbound
  • TCP Ports 135 and 445 Inbound
  • UDP Port 137 Inbound
  • TCP 1024

Are yo running Active Directory? Is the account that you put into the network scan able to log into all of the machines that you are scanning?

thanks for the reply ,

no we donot use AD ,

my machine cannot login all the machines ,

but the default login is same on all the computers , so i mentioned it in the network scan settings .

if you think i ma doing it wrong can you tell me the settings i have to use for a complete network scan.

thank you in advance .

The account that you put into the SpiceWorks scan settings must be an administrator with remote login privildeges to each of the machines that you want to scan. The password has to be the same across the machines. You can test that by using Remote Desktop (RDP) to see if you can log into each of the machines.

yes the account i used was the account with adminstrative priveleges & i can login into all the machines with this account .

Clients have firewall & RDP is not enabled .

Have you opened all of those ports in the firewalls on each machine? If not, try turning off the firewalls altogether.

i disabled the firewall of a computer n ran a scan

still it did not find it

any other suggestions ?

Ping a few of the machines to make sure that they are pingable.

Test to make sure that you can RDP into of the devices.

Check your SpiceWorks scan log for errors reported during the scan.

If that all works then try testing WMI with a command like such:

wmic /user:username /password:yourpassword /node:remotemachine systemenclosure get serialnumber

All of these tests are from the machine running SpiceWorks, of course.

i can ping that address & i can RDP it too .

Did the WMI test work?

this is the output of wmic:

ERROR:
Code = 0x80070005
Description = Access is denied.
Facility = Win32

Well at least we know where the problem is. WMI is the method that SpiceWorks uses to scan the network. If that is not available it cannot gather information from Windows.

Try following the WMI and DCOM allowance procedures here:
