Hello,

I am starting a new I.T. Manager job in a month and would like any suggestions or ideas everyone has. Let me know. Thanks.

Your profile says you have 18 years experience in IT, is this your first position in Management? What other relevant experience do you have?

Prepare to spend more time in meetings than you’ll be comfortable with. All my pals that got “Manager” in their title miss their time doing actual work, rather than having to attend pointless meetings.

Gratz on the new job, btw.

Congratulations on the job. Tip to a good office environment… Let your admins do their work and have faith that they’re doing a good job. If you KNOW they’re not doing a good job, either figure out what’s wrong or move them along. Don’t jump in and try to be an admin again, it just f*cks everything up. I’ve worked for a few bosses that try to do everything from top to bottom because they “are bored with their duties and want to do the ‘fun’ stuff again”. I tell to tell them “You’re the general of the office. The general doesn’t dig trenches and turn wrenches. Please let me do my own work or it’s not going to come out right. Do you see me putting out RFPs for statewide bids? No, it just wouldn’t work.”

not that I ever managed anything but machines and one employee for a short time, I can tell you where almost EVERYONE falls short; communication!!! more is always better.

good luck and don’t forget to take it out on your slaves when you don’t get your bath…

Other than meetings, your biggest job will be to run interference for your staff so they can do their jobs. You may have to put some structure on your staff when it comes to projects, but the reason for this structure is so you can work with the business managers to ensure IT is meeting their needs and setting internal priorities according to what the business needs.

Congrats on your new position.
