After almost 20 years working in IT, I am going from always being a member of the IT team to being the lone IT guy for a SMB. Not too worried about it as I have the exposure to a lot of stuff to back me up and as always, I have this community for backup as well. My list of stuff to do is already long and getting longer by the day. A few of the things I am looking at completing include spinning up Spiceworks, getting an inventory, testing the backups they claim are good, auditing AD, and starting/reviewing documentation. I am kind of surprised at how excited I am for this job. Just looking for things to watch out for as I begin this new adventure.

Congratulations! Keep up with the good job!

Congratulations.

Awesome man, made a similar move a few months ago, and loving every minute of it.

Congrats. I used to be in a 2 man shop at an SMB. Boss handled the special software the company used, but everything else was my wheelhouse. I loved it. It is a nice challenge when it all rests on your shoulders.

My biggest recommendation is: Documentation. Document everything you learn and everything you do. The last thing you want is to be a year down the road and go “WTF was that thing I did here because of the weird environment requirements?”

Congrats and good luck!

Get ready to do a decent amount of non-IT stuff. A lot of times in SMB, you’re asked to do things just because people think you’ll know how to do them.

Congrats! Having done both, I can say this type of role has its perks.

Congrats!!

Congrats! Best of luck to you. The change sounds welcome and I’m sure will keep you plenty busy!

That’s good. And I do not think that you need any of us to answer that what you need to do because you already know that.

Congrats!!

The best advice I can provide is just watch out for mistakes. make none, they’ll be none!

The immortal words of Han Solo “That’s great Kid!, don’t get cocky!”

I did the same thing about 6 years ago. I think it was the best move I could have made.

Congrats !!!

Well done. The biggest culture shock I had was going from an environment that had a Dell account manager and warranty renewals for all the hardware, to an environment that has servers less powerful than some of the mobile phones in the hands of refugees landing in mainland Europe.

Since you will become the go-to guy for anything having electrons, flowing or not, be sure to meet and befriend as many people in the new job as possible. As a lone wolf, the job is only partly about tech, and very much about expectations and possibilities. Once you really understand what your customer is all about, you have the ability to greatly influence where the company goes. Takes a different point of view than being a part of many teams, although YMMV.

Awesome Dude, Did the same about 3 Years ago - Best Move Ever!!!
