Hi,
Started on the Helpdesk at a new company in Windsor, Ca with about 10 locations spread across CA, OR, HI and GA. Like Spiceworks but spent many hours trying to get Networks scans to run correctly so I can work on asset management.
Tried many suggestions from the community but still get the ‘Authentication failed because no Windows account was specified’ and the ‘host unreachable or firewalled’ when testing account to a device.
Any luck or tips?

Welcome to SpiceWorks. If you haven’t joined our group, please do so. Also, there is a meeting on September 14, sponsored by Plantronics. We always talk about and answer any questions people might have about SpiceWorks.
As to the “no Windows account was specified”, there should be a “Manage Accounts” button in the same heading bar as the error. Add in the Administrator account (if it’s a domain). If it’s a workgroup, you’ll have to add in the account of the user to whom the machine belongs.
As for the “host unreachable or firewalled”, make sure Windows firewall is turned off (assuming you have another firewall in place). If you can’t turn the firewall off, you may have to go into "Allow a program or feature through Windows firewall, and make sure Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) is allowed for the domain. I also had to enable “simple network management protocol” in Windows features (Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off).
Hope this helps!
Tried all this already. Thanks fro the info though.
My network guy here says that Spiceworks needs to scan on a particular port number or the firewalls won’t allow it through. If this is true, how does one configure spiceworks to scan on a specific port number, as I cannot find the setting for this. Or does this not matter?
Ok so I run this command from the Spiceworks server: c:\ wmic /user:username /password:yourpassword /node:remotemachine
and i get this error:
ERROR:
Description = The RPC server is unavailable.
Sorry - I have nothing else. You said you tried the SW community, but did you check in with SW Support?
I just found this: http://community.spiceworks.com/scripts/show/920-spiceworks-computer-scan-error-repair
Sorry I can’t help any more than this.
Moved so topic is more noticeable
Just noticed that NSLOOKUP is not resolving workstations by name or IP via DNS. I have now tasked our Network person to resolve this. So I think and hopefully it will be a DNS issue.
Thaks for your input so far. I will update what I can when fixed.
