Hello,

I am working on setting up Spiceworks at my organization. I went and installed everything, but am getting issues when I am trying to scan the network. The following errors have popped up frequently for different devices:

  • Authentication failed because no Windows account was specified
    Spiceworks works best running as a domain administrator.
  • No open ports for this device were found to be responding.
    This typically means that there is a firewall or permission issue preventing remote access.

The first one is confusing as I had used the domain admin account and it worked for some machines and it checked out. However, now it seems that I cannot use that as its giving me the error, “check account, password or WMI configuration”.

The second error is questionable as some devices were able to be scanned, while others were not. Our computers are managed with each computer having identical virus definitions and exceptions and each one having identical firewall settings.

Any assistance anyone can give me in the setup of our inventory would be great!

I am a bit hesitant to ask this as I feel its an obvious answer, but I cannot figure out where to type in the commands (such as: C:> wmic /user:“DOMAIN\username” /node:“remotemachine” systemenclosure get serialnumber) they give me.

The article says, “To do this, we’ll need to run a simple WMI command FROM the machine with Spiceworks installed and TO the remote machine.” I am not familiar with WMI, is this something that is run from cmd?

Yes, you’re on the right track – just open a command prompt window on the server where Spiceworks is installed, and run the commands as indicated at the C:\ or whatever other prompt: wmic /user:“DOMAIN\username” /node:“remotemachine” systemenclosure get serialnumber with your domain, username and remote workstation info replacing the placeholders.

Check your typing: should be “systemenclosure” :slight_smile:

Well, thank you Gabrielle for your trouble shooting tips. I kept being led back to the AV/Firewall settings in these articles, so it seems like that might be the way I need to go. I don’t have the clearance or experience to work with those areas in our organization, so I may have to stall setup of Spiceworks till I can get someone to help me with that.

I can always work on setting up the Help Desk and knowledge base I suppose.
