I have a home network with 4 Windows 7 machines, a mixture of both Pro and Premium. I once tried Spiceworks before and today I tried installing it again, but I’ve never gotten any inventory scan to pick up anything. If I try a WMIC command I get “access is denied”, so I’m sure that’s a part of it, but I can disable firewalls and check DCOM settings I’ve seen and never make any progress. It’s hard for me to believe that getting access to machines with Spiceworks could be this difficult, but unless it is I’m obviously missing something. I’m running a homegroup/workgroup and don’t obviously have a domain, so is there something simple I can do to get Spiceworks access to my machines?

It’s all about authentication - keep that in mind when working with a workgroup - it’s more painful than a domain, but can be done when setting up your scan settings.
edit: Oh, and welcome to SpiceWorks!

I tried the above suggestions and still can’t make any progress. Any other ideas?
Just bumping to see if anyone has any other suggestions that what’s been listed so far.
Hey Joel-
The biggest things I’ve seen with workgroups and Windows 7 are under that Windows 7/Vista With UAC Enabled (non-domain) part in AKP982’s link above and also disabling simple file sharing. This can be done in Windows Explorer via Tools > Folder Options > View tab and it’s towards the bottom.
