Hi All.
I typically am not a morning person. I like to sleep in. I also preferred previous jobs (restaurant) where I had varying days off/on. So, I have been working the 9-5 for 2 years now. My company is getting aquired by a big company and I am looking for a new job. Does anyone know of specific industries/jobs/companies ect that have varrying work schedules? Maybe it’s night shift help desk… late night data center work I don’t know… I am just looking for something less formal… Any ideas?

Maybe try and find work at a call center? Some of the ones i worked at had 24/7 IT staff because the center itself is 24/7

Best job I ever had was working 8am-6pm 4 days on, 4 days off. But I was a nurse at the time working in a homeless shelter…I guess that doesn’t suit?
Cool. NOC = Network Operations Center?

NOC’s are where you want to focus on then.

I had a friend that worked 3rd shift in a data center. He basically played World of Warcraft all night while working, then went home and slept during the day, did school at night. This was over in Sweden I believe. He got paid really good too - like $30 an hour. Any really big corporation, or one that has people working in many different time zones, will need IT support at all hours of the day or night. Look for something like that. I was actually offered a job doing “24 hour on call remote support” working from home, but then the guy that was basically my shoe-in for the job got fired lol.

DON’T work in a call center unless your goal is suicide. Worst job ever. I would pick up sh*t without gloves before I would work in another call center. It drains your soul…

I would also check out hospitals. I know all of them around here have 24x7 IT staff.

You’ll be working on Server 2000 and old Linux bistros but hey…it’s something!

Certainly true in a lot of hospitals but definitely not all.

There are more companies than you think that are open 24/7. The support staff next door for a software company stay until around 11pm, which I think is for their west coast customers. When I was contemplating on leaving the company I work for, a lot of the IT jobs that were open were late night positions.
It is more-so helpdesk than actual admin work. Just check out the job listings in your area. We can point you in the general direction of what to look for but we have no idea what companies are around you.
Like others have said look at larger corporate companies that run 24/7. Some DBA and system admin work normal hours then most every holiday for down time if that is something your interested in. I also know of a few medium sized places that have one person for the second shift. Here at a community college we have faculty and staff and students in classes on campus from 7:30AM to 9PM thus they need IT support during those hours. Most of the IT staff work 8-4:30 but we have one person work 12:30-9PM M-TR then 8-4:30 on Friday because campus is empty Friday evenings. There are also a few student workers to work the help desk and answer basic calls during the weekends.
