I came in this morning with all good intentions of concentrating on putting a dent in a new project, but now I’m finding a lack of motivation to work on it. I’ve been completing tickets and small tasks for the most part (so I haven’t actually been UNproductive), just lacking motivation to work on the big stuff.

What does everyone else do when faced with feeling this way?

As a side note, it may have to do with the fact that I’m on vacation next week.

If you’re on vacation next week, it would be better to wait on the big projects until you’re back. I’d be distracted on the vacation if I started a project before.

It’s the vacation thing. It’s pretty tough to get your mind going on a long term project when you’re about to head out for a bit. Maybe wait til you come back when your head is fresh and just work on small tasks the rest of the week.

We all have days like this, and its always good to catch up on small tickets. What I do is find some small chunks of that large project to work on. Get a vendor quote, make a spreadsheet, do some research, anything to shave the project down a little at a time.

Snap I’ve been feeling down all day. In a can’t be bothered mood.

What is this vacation thing you speak of?

I agree that the impending vacation probably has a lot to do with your mood. when I need to get motivated, I slap in the ear buds, crank up one of my favorite playlists and before you know it, the mood has swung and I’m feeling motivated again! Good luck!

Good point of taking small chunks out of the larger whole. Though, I think I may just wait until I get back to get any actual work on the project done. I suppose it would kind of suck to send an email to a vendor for them to reply while I’m on vacation…

Any suggestions on what you guys do to cope with the “can’t be bothered to work on this” mood?

Yeah it’s the vacation mode that you’ve activated. Always happens before and after a vacation though

Yep, a good playlist gets me out of a funk in no time.

Somewhat paradoxically, a good funk playlist will gitcha outta dat funk in no time!

Make sure you have written out all your steps for your project. Give yourself deadlines. First day back from vacation plan on the first task on the list. You’ll be playing catch-up with the other items that waited while you were gone.

Until then, you can be very productive while procrastinating the big project. That’s what I’ve been doing for over a week. I have completed a lot of other tasks that could have waited, because I don’t want to start on the big one. But after lunch I’m going to get it started!

Love this! Be productive while procrastinating… I think I’ll make this my new motto

See what you can get done now so it is queued up for you when you get back, like quotes, approvals, fire off emails for items that need clarification or additional input.

If you get quick replies you can go ahead and move forward on those portions of your project

Yep, I feel that, I’m feeling the same way today. I’m just really dreading working out later. It’s super cloudy outside and it just makes me want to sit inside and play video games.

It’s bright and sunny here today… kinda cold though at 6C.

Friday is supposed to get up to 19C though. Will have to move back into my house from my igloo in the back yard.

Time for ipod and wicked tunes …

That was me this weekend. Made chili, then found a used copy of Halo-Anniversary Edition (I got nostalgic). Forgot that killing the Flood, at night, with all of the lights off is NOT the best idea.

I think the best way to stay on task with your project is to write out what needs to be done when you get back from vacation. Your mind is already thinking about some time off and taking a break might be what you need to come back and get your project started. Doing the daily work will keep you busy for now but I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Do your work, enjoy your time off, and come back prepared to start something new!
