I have a user that was using an office 365 install. They changed it on one of their computers to use office 2016 pro plus. We can install the office 365, reboot, shows no office install. Great just what we want. We’re install office 2016 pro plus and activate it with the key from MS, and then reboot. When we open the application it shows office 365. How do I get this computer to stop referring back to office 365? I have used the office cleanup tool but that doesn’t help. This is on a windows 10 pro computer.

Not 100% certain this will fix your issue but it appears you need to unsubscribe from Office 365 under the Microsoft account you are using to sign in.

But they use this office 365 account on their other laptop. Will that matter?

Have you tried deleting the Microsoft folder under c: users/app data/ roaming/Microsoft. Delete both Microsoft folders from the local and roaming.
And then try it again.

Yes I have done that a few times. We have reinstalled it about 6 times now with various levels of cleanup and fix.

In Office, if you go to File > Account, do you see the user logged into the Office app with their Office 365 account? If so, have you tried signing out?

I am curious how Office behaves once the user is signed out and you close/reopen. If O365 is still installed, my assumption is it will prompt to sign in again. Office Pro Plus should not ask you to login. Once you sign out, you might try removing Office again.
Can you log in under a different account and install it?

I have removed, uninstalled, deleted, cleaned up, scrubbed down, bleached, burned, etc. all of the Office settings and files on this computer. I installed the correct office 2016 standalone version and it auto logs the user into Office 365. My assumption is since they are using an email address that is associated with their Office 365 account to sign into the Windows 10 PC it is trying to be “helpful”. I sign the user out but it still shows Office365 as the primary Office install and the Office 365 is I click to show other installs. I can’t prevent it from showing Office365 as being installed? The control panel shows only Office 2016, the shortcuts, etc all show Office 2016.

Did you uninstall it from the Microsoft Store APps though?

I ran Lauren7060 solution. When I check the cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus it showed 2 office installs activated. I removed the Office 2016 subscription version and rebooted the computer. I then activated the 2016 retail edition again and it is now working normal. The first time I have seen it where office was installed and activated twice. Thank you dbeato for pointing me to the solution. And then you everyone else for the helping efforts.
