Looking if there is a company/site/suggestion to do some part time work on the weekend for cyber security to get my feet wet in the field. I have my some CompTIA certs and have been in helpdesk for several years and looking to do some part time work to test the waters before potentially making the move. Currently working a side hustle of delivering pizzas but thought part time in the field of interest would be better

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Chris,
Great idea! I’m in roughly the same boat. While I don’t have certs (My next step.) like you do, I’d rather get something related to IT as a side gig. I do part time bartending just for fun and the extra cash is great, but if I could get a semi steady tech gig would be more preferable. That and fiverr is a great idea to take small gigs that can turn into more. Put your skills out there on fiverr for cheap to start, then as you progress change your prices and all that good stuff. That will get you and your services/skillz known better. I’m sure there are other services that are similar around as well.
Best of luck!

Just curious, why test the waters if you’re delivering pizzas? Why not jump right in? If you didn’t like cyber but like technology, you could always switch, but it definitely pays better than your current job.

This is an issue with most corps, none of them want to entertain entry level, even with certs. I just graduated last year with a masters in CS, had two interviews with my current workplace, one for regular security and the other for computer crimes. Waste of my time tbh, so now I switched from helpdesk to Sr Linux admin which what I have wanted for many years in my 22 year tenure. I have 5 year working experience in security to boot but nope not good enough.

Here is your problem, helpdesk was entry level into IT. Then you work your way up to more specific roles. A company will not touch you because you are beyond what they would consider an intern. Once you have any experience of 1-2 years you no longer qualify for an intern position. You also don’t qualify as entry level. You are now an experienced job candidate. You have too much education before having the actual job. That can pose a big problem when you want to get hired. People maybe also seeing a disconnect to your experience in helpdesk and the jump to cyber security as well. It has for me over the years. I ended up in a similar position where people simply told me I had too much education or simply didn’t call me back or lied about calling me.

What else besides the CompTIA certs do you have?

Remember certs are a post bachelorette credential not a substitute for.

Have you considered converting the CompTIA certs into credit by experience courses at a college? This would help get you a degree in cyber security. You could also apply other CPE credits towards a degree in cyber security.

Respectfully disagree.
