If you are running Windows you could burn a copy of this Offline Windows Password & Registry Editor boot to it and it will wipe the password from the account, you can then login and reset the password.

You could also try the Ophcrack Live CD to obtain the password via Rainbow tables, this should work with any OS. You can get it at: ophcrack.sourceforge.net/

Yeah, like above there are various LIVE CD’s - the best one i’ve ever used is the Emergency Rescue Disk. PM me and i’ll give you a link to our FTP

Is it on a network with a domain? Can you log in as the domain admin and then change the local admin?

We use something called WinKey Boot Disc. It resets the Admin password for ya. Super easy!

Emergency Rescue Disk? havn’t tried that one before, I have a copy of the one from pogostick.net, which works very well.

Google Ultimate boot cd ISO file, you can find it for free. There is an offline admin password reset in the NTFS utilities.

Works like a charm.

Just got done doing a similar project. Employee’s laptop was out at a client and their backup IT person, instead of doing what the policy says which is static assignments of IP addresses, joined the computer to the workgroup. Bye-bye domain credentials. No luck logging in as local admin, so they brought it back. I burned the Pogostick app to a CD, told it to boot to the CD, and about 5 minutes later I had reset the local admin password and was able to log in to add it back to the domain.

Printed the instructions and made a nice little spot on the shelf for the CD/instruction envelope in case it happens again.
