Trying to get an idea of what you like for hardware. If you had a choice money no object work laptop, what would it be? Leaving it a bit opened, hoping to get a description of what you like and why.
As for me, I think a macbook pro 15 retina, i support some macs so this just seems versatile, vbox to support the windows side. Let me know what you think.

i switched from a retina 13" to a newer generation mac book air and have no regrets in my opinion retina displays just add a whole lot of hassle especially when you throw using remote desktop into the mix scaling still is not there and they require a lot of your gpu. At this point my 13" i7/8gb/512gb broadwell mac-book air can do anything my 13" retina can and because of how scaling works on the 13" it also gives me more usable work space.
before getting flamed for having a mac i should mention that im currently a sysadmin for a lot of macs running a mac domain.

I think the Surface Pro form-factor with a docking station, keyboard, mouse, and multi-monitor setup is ideal for mobile users. It is more expensive then other setups but it gives you full Windows while working and the size and shape of a tablet.

I’m currently using a Dell E6400 with 4 gigs of ram running Debian, and it does everything I could want it to do.
In my wishlist is a Dell XPS 13 dev edition, though with my usage, a desktop would probably be best. I just grab my chromebook and remote back to my desk if I need anything most of the time
Do you do anything that requires console work that needs a serial port?

Macbook Pro Retina 15 on a Cooler Master stand and hooked to a Seiki 39" 4K monitor (VMware Fusion hosting Windows 7).
Running Windows under a VM on a Mac has been the most stable way to run Windows ever. I think most Mac heads probably use Parallels but with all of my servers on VMware, why add another vendor?

Dell Latitude - we’ve been running them for 12 years now. First the D Series and now E Series. Just solid. Easy to repair when needed. Which is rarely.
Probably have had over 100 of them in the company through the years - 30-40 at a time.

I’d be perfectly happy with a ThinkPad, Precision, or Latitude.

Atleast a 900p resolution, VGA and HDMI out for projectors/monitors, minumim of Core i3 type power, 64bit OS, and an SSD if possible.
no need for serial port, just trying to unify the hardware here and minimize the number of devices that are deployed. even within IT. dell m3800 is an option for us because of the screen size but it seems like most are fine with the smaller screen so maybe a 13 inch will suffice
You might want to consider an upgrade:

I have one of the HP ProBooks right now, however I would love a Surface Pro 3.

For the same price you could get a nice, light work laptop and build a beefy tower

I just use a cheap simple dual core because I always remote into my workstation that lives in the server room. It seems your looking for a one do all. Go Corei7, as much RAM as you can stuff in there, preferably 2 SSDs and the biggest screen you can get/or want.
Now the more you pay the less you get, weight wise at least.

I use an HP EliteBook. It has been a solid performer, Core i5 with 8GB of ram. I will get another one if this thing ever conks out on me.
