I’ve tested teamviewer and logmein rescue. Neither seem to have the feature I’m looking for. Both seem to require the remote user to run an exe every time they need help.

I want to permanently install the client on the users computer so that I can just click connect and it then prompts them to allow me to access their screen and take remote control. I’ve noticed I can set this up with DameWare but DameWare only seems good when clients are on our internal network. I need to support both local and remote users.

Any suggestions?

Logmein Free has this ability.

Yes.

Do they have a router capable of port forwarding?

If so install VNC and change the default port, you don’t have to but I would and did.

Next, give the PC a static IP Address.

Router in the Port Forwarding portion add the IP Address and Port

So if their external WAN is 76.50.112.60 you can open VNC viewer on you system and hit that like this 76.50.112.60:6000, 6000 would be the port number you may have changed it to, default is 5800

I did this for my 2 servers at my house and my Mothers so I could access her system, you know mothers and PC’s

I’m looking for a feature rich remote support tool. I’ve used vnc before but I’m staying away from that for this project. The software I need should work over any firewall just as teamviewer and logmein rescue does. I’ve used logmein free but it’s designed to access “your” computers, it’s not really a support tool. Honestly, I didn’t even consider logmein free or pro as those are listed under “access your computer” section on their website but maybe I’ll take another look.

My initial request seems simple. I’m surprised logmein rescue or teamviewer don’t already have that functionality.

If you do what I posted with Tight VNC not the others like Real VNC you have all kinds of options the others do not offer like File Transfers.

I also installed UpdateIP which emails me anytime mine or my mothers routers IP Address Changes since she is on Verizon Cable and Dynamic.

So about every 2 or 3 months i get an email from her that UpdateIP sends, mine for some reason has not changed in 2 years.

There’s is nothing I can’t do that any other program offers

Look at ScreenConect ( http://www.screenconnect.com/ ). For the situation you are speaking of where there is no end-user they refer to it as unattended sessions. You can do the trial to see if it does what you need.

I just tried Logmein Free and the screen was so small, I saw the magnifier but I’ll stick with the way I have it setup and the fact I don’t need a viewer and can use the browser anywhere is even better.

In the browser http://76.112.50.60:5800 and your in

you can adjust the screen resolution with in logmein free…

Yea I guess it was the Zoom feature

I don’t want unattended remote access. My user needs to be prompted to allow the connection.

For free this might be tricky, but I think Laplink has something that prompts the accessee to allow a connection I think.

Tight VNC can be setup so the person must allow access, it is called

query console on incoming connections Option

This will prompt the user to ALLOW you into the system

It doesn’t need to be free, actually I was planning on spending money on this. I’ve used TightVNC before. I’m looking for something more like teamviewer or logmein. I checked my logmein client and it looks like it can be configured to require permission so logmein free or pro may work.

It seems like they would have this functionality in their rescue tool but I haven’t seen the option anywhere yet.

I would think he could turn this on or off at will

Yes, I’m aware of that. It looks like you can also make it require permission if you go to options preferences, then Reject request option on the bottom although I haven’t tried it yet.

I guess I can either install Logmein free\pro and do that or use logmein rescue. I just found a pretty slick feature which let’s me install a icon on the users desktop, they can click it, enter their name and click connect. That’ll work too.

There are definitely numerous features (especially with Logmein Pro) that allow you to tweak, enhance or hide settings so your users can’t mess with it too much. UltraVNC also has some capabilities here, but it is all managed at the desktop, whereas Logmein is managed at the web console.

I know you can alert on connection - in addition, I know you can hide the icon so they can’t adjust or view settings. I believe there is also the capability of enabling a password to limit access the settings entirely if you do want to keep the icon in the Systray.

GoToManage (formerly GoToAsisst) provides this feature. I’ve been using it for years and am very happy with it.

I looked at their website briefly and saw both of those products but was unsure which to try as I don’t think they had a good comparison chart. Now that you mention it, I may go back and test it after all.

However, at this point I’m leaning toward Logmein Rescue or Logmein free\pro. I’ve already configured logmein rescue calling card with logo etc. and installed it on a users PC. This is a nice solution as nothing is running on the pc (i don’t need\want unattended access). The user can run the program type their name click connect and they are in the queue waiting for support. It seems very professional with the branding and is less intrusive than having something running in the background all the time.

Teamviewer does have this ability. You need to register the client machine with them and set an ‘unattended’ password.

I’m poking about here to see if there are any better alternatives before ponying up to to purchase the Premium version.
