Welcome to the community
At the moment yes thats the only way it will work probably
You could try to setup http://community.spiceworks.com/education/projects/Spiceworks_Stand-Alone_Data_Collector on every machine and send the info back across your internet connection but you would have to open loads off firewall ports + if a machine’s scan mucks up you wouldnt know.
You could install spiceworks at each office and get it to send the alerts back you your normal email address.
Hope this helps
Andy
Yes that helps a lot I think I will setup the VPN for the sites. Seems like it will be the easiest way to do this.

Hey Shawn,
you can also use a free vpn if you have access to the machines. not sure if that is an option for you. I’m not sure the standalone deal is ready to be used by people who aren’t familiar with spiceworks yet.
I set spiceworks up to use hamachi addresses a while back. I have 3 hamachi networks with 10 computers each connected to my spiceworks box. In spiceworks I built 30 individual scans for 30 hamachi IPs. It is not the most elegant solution but it is free and it works when hamachi links are up. You have to remember to allow all traffic types in your hamachi setup and start hamachi as a service. If you want this to work 100% of the time your probably have to get the paid version of hamachi.
Others have had success with OpenVpn. Someday we might get a client for spiceworks and be able to just point to a port back at home.
Other than that, Andy’s suggestion of an install at each office isn’t actually too bad. You could probably run it on somebody’s desktop and they wouldn’t notice. Just don’t scan every 30 minutes. It would be easy to see where help desk tickets are from based on what spiceworks server they come from.
