Hey guys. I’m wondering if I can use my leftover SC400 Disk Enclosures as direct attached storage to a PowerEdge R630 server as a backup solution. I have a spare HBA card that supports 12Gbps SAS installed already in the server as well as the cables needed but I’m concerned the PERC Controller on the server wont pick it up as I get some contradicting search results in google in regards to what the SC400 can be used with.

It was originally used with a Compellent SC4020 (as extended storage) that was connected to our older FX2s chassis. But the license on the compellent ran out and we cannot factory wipe it and reinstall it without dell assisting us with the license files - which they clearly don’t want to do since we are out of support now… Was just trying to think of a way I could use all these beautiful 4TB hard drives and I saw the SAS connections and figured “Why not?”

Anyone ever run across this issue before? Is the SC400 compatible with the R630? or do I absolutely NEED an MD1200 or something of that sort? Thanks for the help in advance!

One of the first questions I would ask would be how old is your SC400 ?

Coz SAS or SATA HDD usually have a lifespan of between 36 to 60 months before things start failing…then the 4TD HDD would not be that beautiful any more ?

The SC400 should come with its own PERC controller (for the server) as well as the cables ? But they are “expansion units” for SC4020 so they cannot work alone or be used for other servers.
