I am having problems connecting to a desktop with XP Pro on it. I have the correct user name and password and can establish a Remote Desktop Connection to the system, but Spiceworks says that “There was a Windows authentication error when attempting to connect to this device.” I have double checked the WMI settings to ensure that the user name is listed with priviledges as well. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I just tried those steps and DCOM is setup correctly, as well as the other steps. I even disabled the firewall and tested. Still get the Windows authentication error. Any other ideas?
I have had cases like this, so I feel your pain.
Early on, I had two boxes that resisted all attempts to connect. They “magically” started working properly after removing them from the domain and adding them back. Kind of an extreme step, but it worked for me.
This would seem to point to potential DNS issues. So, make sure your DNS settings are OK.
