Installed Spiceworks last year. All workstations show as unknown in inventory with only limited information like IP address. I am told this might be a firewall setting on the router but these are devices scanned inside the LAN. I just today upgraded to the latest version of SW on all my servers and would really like to get it working right. I am excited about all the possibilities. Thanks.

Have you already changed the firewalls on the clients to allow for remote administration and opened up TCP 135 to allow the WMI connection?

Thanks for your reply. The Windows firewall is controlled by group policy and WMI should be working because I am able to pull a serial number from a remote workstation by running the following command, which is a test SW forum said to use to see if WMI is working.

c:\ wmic /user:username /password:yourpassword /node:remotemachine
 systemenclosure get serialnumber

Do you know of another test to see if it is working?

Have you already gone through the rest of the suggestions on this page?

Do you have A/V blocking the WMI connection? Do the devices respond to a ping from the SW server?

The devices do ping. I haven’t gone through everything on that page yet. I don’t think it is a problem with AV, but maybe. We use Vexira. I uninstalled in on a machine to make sure though. Is there a way to force a SW scan of a specific device so I don’t have to wait?

Try running a manual scan from the inventory screen and see if that goes through.

You can also try changing your network scan settings to a particular machine and let that run.
