This may be a dumb question, but how do I scan a computer that I know is on the network but does not show up in the list of devices?

2 Spice ups

Is the Computer in the Scan Range you setup ?

or

Did you get a Scan Error ?

You need to make sure it is in one of the IP ranges beings scanned and is online. Ping works to find this out, this gives you IP address and if it responds to Pings it will at least get a basic SW scan.

Agreed with Justin. If you want to scan just one machine, add a new scan entry in Spiceworks for just that machine.

Also be sure to look in your “unknown devices” under inventory to see if that machine did get scanned but just had some scan errors. If that’s the case, the only information that will get populated is the IP address.

It’s in the IP range, I can ping the machine. It’s a laptop that was probably connected to the network after I did a main scan.

How do I add a new scan entry or even force a scan?

Obviously, I am new to this, having just installed it this morning, but I can’t find a way to force a scan or add devices to be scanned. I was prompted when I started it to scan the local machine or the network (I think)!

Have you taken a look at the support section about the Spiceworks Inventory?

This should get you started: http://community.spiceworks.com/help/Adding_New_Devices#Why_Range

I would add a scan range for just that single IP and see if it picks it up. Also take a look at the support section for troubleshooting the scans: http://community.spiceworks.com/help/Resolving_Unknown_Devices

hope that helps!

Thanks for the help. I was able to add the missing computers to my inventory.

Great! Glad to hear it!
