To start with, I am not trying to sound rude or unappreciative of what is being done with Spiceworks. If I didn’t appreciate it I would not have spent the past 2 months trying to resolve my issues. I would have just said screw it a long time ago.

I really want it to work and like what it offers; however, it seems that Windows 7 integration is (for some) unattainable??

What I do not understand is that it works perfectly fine for my XP machines; however, we have recently moved the majority (and will in the next 6 months, completely) of our machines to Windows 7 and since then I see a much larger number next to the orange and white triangle (essentially 90% of my entire machines).

I understand that everyone’s environment is different, sometimes in major ways and sometimes in small ways.

I would consider us to be in a relatively “normal” setup - no weird configuration, group policies or firewall settings or anything. One would think there would be a little bit more useful help on these issues. I have found some of the information regarding opening Remote Admin ports, configuring WMI, etc. Unfortunately this does not resolve my issues.

That being said, here is the last shot - if I cannot get it to work, I will have to give up on Spiceworks because it doesn’t work in my situation (or at least I cannot receive much help in getting it to work). Out of the several posts I have posted in the community I have had a couple of awesome guys trying to help me; however, not one time have I ever seen a Spiceworks rep or administrator respond to help. Leads me to beleive either a.) they don’t care, or b.) they don’t know how to fix it

We are running in a windows domain environment (one domain only).

2 Servers

Windows Server 2008R2 (64-bit) (Domain Controller, Fax Server, Internet Proxy)

Windows Server 2008 SP2 w/Exchange 2007 (AD, Exchange, File Server, etc.)

We have roughly 60 machines - all PC’s: 25% XP(all 32-bit) SP3, 75% Windows 7(about 50% 32-bit/50%64-bit.

Spiceworks can detect almost all of them (I am assuming by simply using the information on the server) but cannot connect to them - most of the errors are Windows WMI Port not open, firewall problem?

I understand what this is saying - I have run the “netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=“windows management instrumentation (WMI)” new enable=Yes” on all my Windows 7 machines. This worked on an average of about 1 out of every 10 that were getting scan errors.

One those that it didn’t work on, just to check, I manually went into the firewall and enable every inbound rule associated with Remote Admin and WMI - still no go.

Seriously, what am I missing here? I have not tried disabling UAC and will not do this as it is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of doing. If this is my only option then it is to the trashcan with Spiceworks.

Bottom Line - I am not trying to beat Spiceworks up - Like I said, I really do like it, but I think that a little more support in getting this to work would be awesome. Can ANYONE help me at all? Thanks!

Mike

5 Spice ups

Sorry to hear you are having problems.

My win 7 boxes scan fine try:

Resolving Spiceworks Unknowns Unofficial

Also what is the error? there are lots of types of scan errors

Also are there any topics you have already posted so we can see a history?

I found a couple like The WMI Problem - Windows 7 | Server 2008 SP2 which you have not replied to.

Just to show it working

Yes it is really called mushypants.

I love mushypants, becuase they are mushy and it feels nice when i sit down.

acs-mike,

First - I’m sorry the hear you’re having such bad time getting SW up and running.

As for myself I have 2 networks with win 7 and it works great.

It wil be nice if you could post back link to your previuos posts so we can refresh our memories on the subject.

Now-Let’s get to work

  • Do you have any other endpoint security solution installed that includes FW, other than Windows Firewall ?
  • Can you, as a test, Disable Windows Firewal completely? Do this just on one machine that still have scan error so we can use it for additional testing.
  • It is not mandatory to disable UAC, actually some spicehead have reported that it works fine with UAC on.
  • Disable incremental scanning if it is turned on and set speed scan to slow.

One you get it done, try to scan just that one pc and post back the results and we will take it from there.

Oh, I beleive that it is working, don’t get me wrong. I have some Windows 7 machines that do work fine. Herein lies my frustration - these are all fairly new installs, by me only so they are uniform and because they are on the domain and managed by GP, they should all be the same there too - so why aren’t the rest of my Windows 7 machines not working?

{mushypants = classic!}

Mike

@ and because they are on the domain and managed by GP, they should all be the same there too - so why aren’t the rest of my Windows 7 machines not working? Are you sure that GP is applied with no errors?

run rsop.msc on pc with error - what are the results?

@ I found a couple like The WMI Problem - Windows 7 | Server 2008 SP2 which you have not replied to.

I forgot about that one - now it is replied to (didn’t do the trick by the way)

Mike

Mike - Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what happens when you drop one of the previous installs from the network then re-add it, then try to re-scan?

Hey Mike, sorry to hear you have had so much trouble.

We have stacks of Windows 7 PCs in our network and client networks and no real problems to speak of.

Try this how-to to get be the most common UAC issue without disabling UAC: http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/317

I sincerely hope you get it sorted, Spiceworks is a great product and I’m sure none of us are in a hurry to see the back of you either.

I wanted to speak to the SW reps not responding. The community is really more for the users of Spiceworks for the most part…I mean, SW reps do respond to various issues, but typically, they leave it to the community to answer the various technical questions.

If you do persist in having issues, you can contact them by doing the following:

http://community.spiceworks.com/help/How_Do_I_Send_Spiceworks_My_Log_Files%3F

But, as I said, they usually will leave the issue handling to the community experts so as to not flood their support staff with issues that can be resolved by the community with aggregate know-how that exceeds the SW staff (not to downplay them, they are SMART!).

So.

Hopefully we can help you get your problems resolved!

@rsop.msc

Here are the results from a couple of the machines (in screen shots)

This is under Administrative Templates (which is the only information that I have found to change - I have a strong feeling that it is these configurations that are the issue, but I cannot find in Spiceworks the appropriate settings - ALL the appropriate settings, that is)

Actually, I ran this on a couple of the non-working machines and it is exactly the same, so no need to post more links of the same images.

Mike

@ Can you, as a test, Disable Windows Firewal completely? Do this just on one machine that still have scan error so we can use it for additional testing.

Definately a firewall issue. I completely disabled it and it worked straight away on at least one machine.

I sort of knew this was the issue - my problem was that I cannot find/figure out what setting is needed to allow spiceworks to work.

Mike

@ Mike - Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what happens when you drop one of the previous installs from the network then re-add it, then try to re-scan?

Same problems…

@Try this how-to to get be the most common UAC issue without disabling UAC: http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/317

Since I can completely disable the firewall and have it working, I do not think that it is a UAC problem (thankfully)

I realize that for the most part - which is why I had not contacted them. I think what I really was trying to say (or was a little upset about) is that I would at least think they would gather the community information together to offer a fairly straightforward troubleshooting approach and keep it updated. Meaning - “Hey, this guy seems to be having a lot of trouble with Windows 7 issues - let’s figure out what the issue is so that we can let others know about it in an easy to find place so they can be happy and enjoy Spiceworks as well!”

Basically, I feel it is a relatively simple solution, but really had no one before now actually trying to help me. (In general)

Mike

Another point of information - on the PC that I disabled the firewall to get it to work - I turned the firewall back on and did not get any errors (is this normal?). Also, I can now view the Running Processes. Is this also normal (i.e. separate from the previous firewall issues?).

Does this mean that I need to disable the firewall, scan, then reenable the firewall?

Mike

Mike - my guess is that it keeps the previous information from when you did the initial scan, so it won’t give you any errors. Once that firewall is back up it probably still won’t be able to scan the most current info.

@ Also, I can now view the Running Processes - This is a new feature in version 4.6

@

Does this mean that I need to disable the firewall, scan, then reenable the firewall? - No if your FW is setup correctly you don’t.

I assume you read - http://community.spiceworks.com/help/Configuring_AV_Firewall_Domain

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. Hopefully someone can help me out with the correct firewall implemenation (preferrably through GP). In most cases I have experienced plenty asking questions about the problem as has happened here, but then no one seems to know what I do from this point… Thanks!

Mike

Mike, I agree with Yasaf. Have you read the post about opening up the Firewall and AV programs? That may help you out a ton.

Let’s hope that this will get this issue sorted so you can really make the most of out SW.

Give it a try and post back if you need further assistance.
