Hey everyone. I work for a charter school turn-around company called Matchbook Learning. We currently manage one school in Newark, NJ and two schools in Michigan; one in Detroit and one in Redford. We are seeking an IT Manager for the Detroit campus, which is the elementary school for Michigan Technical Academy. We would like a candidate that has a basic foundation in IT and has some experience supporting users with PC, Mac, Chromebook, and iOS. I would consider this an entry level position (starting at Tier 1 but growing in the role) as much of the training and how our operations work is unique and learned on the job. This would be a great position for someone looking to start their IT career fresh out of college or great for someone who might need a job while taking a year off of college.
You would work at the elementary school, but would be an employee of Matchbook Learning. This would be a full-time salaried position ($35k-$55k/year depending on experience). Great benefits too (medical, dental, vision, 401k, etc… I speak from experience).
If you have any questions feel free to reach out. We really need to fill this position quickly and I haven’t had any applicants that pique my interest yet. Please refer anyone you feel is qualified for the position. It never hurts to apply.

applicants that peak my interest yet
It’s “pique” my interest. Normally, I don’t correct, but there might be school kids watching.
My experience is that working in school IT can be the most challenging and thankless of jobs. Good luck finding the right person.

Since it’s impossible to peak your interest I doubt you’ll get any successful applicants. Now if you want some that pique your interest then you might succeed.

The Title is IT manager, your profile says you work with a staff supporting the teachers and students, but you say this is an entry level position?
I know titles aren’t the end all be all, but is this a manager position or a help desk position? Working K12 titles are all over the place as is, you have IT directors, IT managers, Technology Coordinators, different schools call the positions different titles. Are all the employees of this position considered a IT manager?
Not sure about how the charter schools work in that area, I know around the state I work in, all salary information is public information. The Department of Education requires a disclosure of a salary schedule. You may find that you get better and more applicants if you post the salary range.

The position is for IT Manager of the Detroit campus because this person would be responsible for managing all technology and user requests in the school (helpdesk tickets, laptops, chromebooks, etc.). They should be on the front line for everything technology related in the school and then escalate up through the Matchbook Technology team as necessary.
Salary for this position doesn’t have to be posted because the employer is the management company, Matchbook Learning, not the school directly. You do, however, have a great point. I will check with my higher-ups to see if I am allowed to include a salary range. Thanks!

Normally I’d ignore errors like this but this is for a school. Grammar isn’t married to Gramper in this case - grammar, spelling, and punctuation needs to be correct.

Entry level IT Manager. Where were these types of positions when i started? Anyway, this looks like a position i would have applied for. I like the tittle and the amount of responsibility that comes with this. Have you reached out to local schools to see if they have any grads that might be interested?

I have started that process at several local schools. They all have various paperwork and processing delays. Given that school starts next week, we have to find someone soon.

@tmeans I apologize if this comes off as pedantry after the grammar correction earlier, but your position title is inaccurate and misleading. An IT Manager is someone who manages an IT team, not someone who manages devices. From the description you posted you’re looking for level 1 helpdesk/tech support, not a manager. There are significant differences between the two in skills and salary expectations.

I can appreciate what you’re saying. Unfortunately, I am not the one to make or post employment listings. I just shared the post here with some more info to try to get some more applicants. Being short one person is killing me and my workload as I have to pull double duty at two separate locations.I do value this feedback and will definitely pass it up the chain.
Thanks!

I thought this same thing but didn’t want to say anything.

I have found that the students are the most respectful and they are the best people to work with in education. Teachers on the other hand I cannot stand several of them. We have one teacher in a lab that did not tell me there was an issue with a computer and makes the kid who is assigned there sit and do nothing during class time, even though there are a few extra computers the student could sit at.
