Hi Everyone,

I’m in a bit of a lurch because our network service providers is not responding to my requests.
We have a server that is setup as virtual machine on a linux box. I powered down our server in order to do some server room re-organizing, and it the server won’t come back up. The box comes up to a command line prompt, but it doesn’t startup the VM that has our server.

This is the 5th day we’ve been without service and it’s impacting all of our operations. If you can recommend a specialist so we can hack into our own system, I’d appreciate it.

Best,

Jim

First figure out what distribution it is - Debian, CentOS, etc.

Does it still allow you to actually log in at the command line? Do you have the root password?

Generally this is caused by a failure of the “graphic” part of Linux, such as X, the window manager or desktop environment. Typing “startx” at the prompt may at least get you a more specific error to search on, if you are missing it flying by during startup.

Cheers for responding.
I don’t know what distribution it is. I could always do another cold reboot and take note.
Currently it’s at a prompt for Proxmox Virtual Environment. It’s waiting for credentials to be entered.
I don’t have that information.

The Proxmox site has links to paid support and their support forum. Try that.

Thanks Ethan6123. I should have considered this in the first place.

Folks, I appreciate your responses.

We managed to resolve it with help from local consultants. Our consultant was Michael “Moose” Dinn. I’m sure many Halifax/Nova Scotia Spiceworks people would know him. He passed away and he will be missed. I wish I had know him better, but I certainly enjoyed working with him.

Cheers again for offering your suggestions.

Jim

I knew Moose some 30 years ago - hadn’t heard he’d passed. Thanks for the update, Jim!
