Hello there!
We did have a bad day yesterday, the mainboard of our vm storage died.
we were able to recover most of our servers from backups (thanks dr).
But we are having one Windows 2003 std vm that does not want to start after recovery.
In it’s early days, that machine was a physical server, we virtualized it and since then it was running smoothly.
The plan was to replace it in a few month, we were not ready to have it die this way.
When we are strating the vm, the only thing we see is:

Did So, my question is: Did anybody experience this before?
Are there any suggestions how to solve this?
Any hint in the right direction would be highly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, but this did not help me
We are using ESXi 6.0 and the vm is not booting up, it just shows this screen, so it is not a problem with display or something else.
We can not ping the machine or contact it in any different way.
Our guess is, that it has something to do with the fact, that it was a physical server and we used vmware converter to make it virtual.
Might be, that it did not backup all the settings as it should have…
And yes, we tried turning it on and off, more then once…
Maybe mount a Windows CD or DVD on the VM and try to run a repair.

I tried, but without success
At least I was able to get my fingers on the files that are on the Server …
But I still need to start that machine.
Since you have the data, maybe it’s just as easy to spin up a new VM?

I have now created a new VM and konfigured it, but I still want to know, what happened to my backup.
I even tested older backups and they all don’t want to start
It’s just for this one VM that was an physical server once, all the others are running fine after recovery.
I don’t want this to happen again, thats why I want to find out what is wrong with this backups / vm.
It’s really hard to say. What are you using for backup software?

I’m using the vSphere Data Protection 6.0.
I’m sorry, I’m totally unfamiliar with that product. You might consider a new thread in the VMware group, reference Data Protection in the title.
