What do you guys do when your job gets boring? I am not talking about extra time but just boring SSDD. I like to learn new things I have never done before like learn some new software thats way over my head or go into a company and play cleanup. I look at all kinds of different stuff but if I can’t implement it for a reason its worthless and boring. The day goes by so slow. I usually start looking for another job when this happens but the pay is good here. Any suggestions?

Now back to yahoo for me…

8 Spice ups

I read posts from other who are bored, and also look for another job, although it’s a bad time of year for that i think.

Answer posts on Spiceworks. Look at the headlines from Techcrunch, eweek, zdnet, direct2dell.

Wanna come over? It’s been months since I’ve had “boring time”…I used to have at least one good day a week to play on toy projects.

i also enjoy dismantling broken electronics, but usually get bored halfway through putting whatever it is back together again and give up. as a consequence i have many half-assembled broken peripherals littering my office.

We should hook up an Unreal tournament server. That way when some of us are bored and nothing to do, we just log in and start the battle.

what’s free time?

I read a lot on the internet when I’m bored. Or try some new software

Someone has other suggestions? :stuck_out_tongue:

Read stuff on various forums, including spiceworks, make a cuppa, plan the weekend, read my IT management book, organise my filing, tidy the office, walk around the building to check up on people/computers.

If it gets really bad, i’ll ring my supplier and find out whats new

Try software you’re unfamiliar with. If you have spare box around try installing a new Linux distrubution, or put Apache on a Windows box, check out Joomla, learn PHP/MySQL or Java, build an Untangle box. Become the webmaster for a non-profit.

We are working on a new Virtual Iron system and that is a great thing about it. You can setup a server or desktop virtual system in minutes and test out all kinds of software. Then just delete the virtual machine after you are done. Good times…

Usually about the time I get bored, I have to rebuild my computer from when I was bored the last time and installed all the freeware tools that looked cool but ended up trashing my pc - so now I have to rebuild my pc. damn…

Frank had an excellent idea: become the webmaster for a non-profit. I recently did that. It definitely helped sharpen my web skills and took up a lot of boredom time, but be careful, just because they don’t drive revenue doesn’t mean they won’t want everything a million dollar company has!

Buddy, I do the same thing with VMWare Server or Hyper-V almost daily. Take snapshots of a couple of my favorite OSs and I can spin a new one in a minute or two.

Unfortunately, when I get bored I look for other jobs too! When I’ve got free/bored time I try to make myself more marketable. You can never do enough of that in IT. Listen to podcasts or watch video tutorials or CBTs on different certifications. Get a cert if you don’t have one.

Read blogs; Information Week, Tech Republic, SQL Central, SQL Skills etc. etc.

If I didn’t spent 30% of my week reading blogs I wouldn’t be able to properly support my company or my users.

No. I bet too high and too soon.

Perfect, what is your online id?

Boring here??? NEVER LOL.

We have so many mentally challenged people who work here and find new ways to make me go mad.

Example the other day someone managed to jam a machine so bad that it took 30 minutes for me to unjam.

I’m starting up a webdesign/hosting business on the side - now just need some paying punters!
