Hello fellow SpiceHeads,

We’ve been working on making sure our software is compliant and we are looking for a tool that will go in and rip all of the licenses off all of our machines. Spiceworks does an excellent job of telling us where software is installed, and the manual entry feature is easy to use. However, we are looking for something more automated/less time consuming, like Belarc Advisor, but will work with a large amount of nodes and is fairly cheap. Belarc System Manager seems like it will take care of the job fairly well, especially given the success of testing the free Belarc Advisor application, but we are not eager to pay the expensive price tag that comes along with that software. Any less-costly and sufficient alternatives? Better yet, when is Spiceworks going to update their algorithms to infiltrate my network and get all that information for free?

Klinzmann.name is awesome it has a free software that can manually scan 1 computer at a time, or you can purchase different levels of licensing that would allow you to “Batch process” all domain computers at once. The domain scan is very slow in my experience and it will only scan 1 computer at a time. But it may be worth running free and trying it out. You can still batch scan without the license purchase but you can’t save the results or see everything it found.

Also, as for Spiceworks auditing licenses. Spicewokrs currently only knows how to scan windows products. anything else you would manually have to input the keys and verify them.

Update:

Seems like Belarc Manager IS the solution. All of the other software we came across had more limitations on what types of licenses they can salvage. Its kind of disappointing that Spiceworks can’t do this as comprehensively as Belarc Manager, but I suppose that’s the price of freedom.

Any news on Spiceworks updating/adding license retrieval algorithms in the future???
