One of the things that has come up since we moved to the new Community platform, is how Categories are sorted using the “New” filter. Right now, this sort is based off of “Activity” which denotes the last reply to a topic. This is essentially what the “Last Updated” filter in the vintage platform did.

We’d love to offer both options, but for the short-term, we can adjust the behavior of “New” to be more like “Recent” in the vintage platform, which sorts them by the Topic Creation date instead of which top was most last posted in.

While it is a quick change we can make, it would affect everyone. So the question is, if we updated this soon (vs Soon™), which would you prefer and why?

Which method do you prefer Categories get sorted by?
  • By the topics with the latest replies
  • By the topics that are most recently created

Note, if we do make this change in the short-term, this would only affect Categories, not My Feed.

By Topics that are most recently created. If you sort by last activity, new posts will quickly fall off the “front page” unanswered while busy topics will dominate the landscape.

By all means have both options, but I think posts by creation date should be the default from a usability perspective. We have some topics that have gone on for years and those will be higher placed than a new post.

This has been primarily a Q&A site that many people use for troubleshooting. Putting recent activity first rather than new posts risks driving unanswered questions down in the feed so they don’t get answered quickly (and might not get answered at all).

To keep this a valuable resource to the IT world, especially to welcome new users, we need to make sure that everyone’s question has a fair chance of being answered.

My vote is to sort by most recently created. Making this one change for my New Topics bookmark has changed my opinion of the new site from “Awful” to “Maybe this won’t be so bad.”

I think an ideal solution would be the option to flip between both, I prefer to have latest threads at the top, I can scroll down to recent threads I posted in, and I honestly probably won’t be looking at 6 month old threads someone chose to post in.

To be clear, that is the long-term goal. Not every member reads and engages in the Community platform the same way, so its great to allow people to customize their experience to what best suits them.

But, the short-term way of addressing this is one or the other, which is why we’re asking. This is more of a fast-follow update while we look at how to properly address this (which will take more time to do properly).

Creation Date, please.
When the new Community went live I was immediately hit with posts from 10+ years ago as “New” because of recent activity and couldn’t find any actual new posts, at least until the work-around that is “?order=created”

Quick update on this. As the general consensus is to change the category pages to sort by topic created date we’ve submitted a ticket with our engineeering team to get that changed over. We’ll post again to let you know when that change has been made.

As @Sean-Spiceworks said, that won’t impact My Feed, but if you want to also sort My Feed by topic created date there is a URL for that, more details over here Temporary solution to sort My Feed by Topic Created Date

I think it would make sense for the My Feed button to sort by activity date and for the New button to sort by creation date.

I also think there could be a filter – but I can’t say I’m sure what the filter should be: Topic, Group, Category, etc. are all decent possibilities.

If possible, it would be preferable to set the New filter to sort topics by creation date rather than last activity. This would allow users to more easily track and join new discussions in the order in which they appear.
