SPICE-E BACoN (UDTQ#115) - Just a QUIC Question
Happy Wednesday, folks… I woke up thinking it was Thor’s day already, so the paint fumes have apparently gone to my head!
The Recap:
Yesterday’s question asked what shell is used by default in modern MacOS’s terminal and nearly 2/3 of you correctly chose zsh!
Due to some internal testing of some cool new stuff that’s coming soon *wink link* I’ve been writing explanations for the upcoming questions anyway, so I’m just going to copy/paste those into their own details tags where it makes sense
Modern MacOS releases default to using the Zsh shell. Reportedly, this decision was made to avoid complying with Bash’s current GPL license. Prior to this, MacOS used an older version of Bash that was available under a different license.
Ksh (Also known as Korn shell) is a shell that Zsh claims to resemble (see their documentation for more info on that.)
PowerShell is now available for MacOS, but is not installed by default.
Turtle Shells are the protective covering found on the backs of turtles

The Ramble:
Do you eat breakfast? If so, what are your favorite breakfast foods?
We recently bought pre-made frozen pancakes for the first time (since I’m WFH now, I find myself in need of quick morning meals. Back when I was in the office, I’d usually just place a to-go order for wherever my colleagues were going for lunch and ask them to bring it back for me.) I was expecting them to be pretty bad, but they weren’t!
I don’t quite know what I was expecting, but I found they were actually best when microwaved for ~30 seconds. The toaster oven made them too crispy, and we no longer have a regular toaster, but I expect it would be pretty similar results.
The Real Question:
Thanks to @jspr for submitting this question! (Sorry that I modified your answers and didn’t use the ones with the fun references! I liked them, but wanted to test some things
)
What is QUIC
- A UDP-based protocol that implements TCP-like features and TLS-like security with less overhead/latency
- A framework to quickly deploy different versions of websites for multiple browsers simultaneously
- A method of routing packets using data in the payload to dynamically find the closest available host node
- A fast-curing brand of bacon
- I’m not sure, but I’m excited to learn more!
The Rest:
If you’d like to be notified when there’s a new question, check out this How To guide on following tags! I also typically post in the General chatroom when they go live, so come hang out there too!
As always, if you have suggestions for future questions, improvements, or want to help out with a full question, shoot me a DM or leave a comment below!
And since you’re still reading this, don’t forget to leave me a spice-up just below this! If it’s not orange and filled-in like this →
it’s not spiced up yet! It lets me know you enjoy these and gives us both points, so why not?
