SPICE-E BACoN (UDTQ#115) - Just a QUIC Question

Happy Wednesday, folks… I woke up thinking it was Thor’s day already, so the paint fumes have apparently gone to my head!

The Recap:

Yesterday’s question asked what shell is used by default in modern MacOS’s terminal and nearly 2/3 of you correctly chose zsh!

Due to some internal testing of some cool new stuff that’s coming soon *wink link* I’ve been writing explanations for the upcoming questions anyway, so I’m just going to copy/paste those into their own details tags where it makes sense

Modern MacOS releases default to using the Zsh shell. Reportedly, this decision was made to avoid complying with Bash’s current GPL license. Prior to this, MacOS used an older version of Bash that was available under a different license.

Ksh (Also known as Korn shell) is a shell that Zsh claims to resemble (see their documentation for more info on that.)

PowerShell is now available for MacOS, but is not installed by default.

Turtle Shells are the protective covering found on the backs of turtles :joy:

The Ramble:

Do you eat breakfast? If so, what are your favorite breakfast foods?

We recently bought pre-made frozen pancakes for the first time (since I’m WFH now, I find myself in need of quick morning meals. Back when I was in the office, I’d usually just place a to-go order for wherever my colleagues were going for lunch and ask them to bring it back for me.) I was expecting them to be pretty bad, but they weren’t!

I don’t quite know what I was expecting, but I found they were actually best when microwaved for ~30 seconds. The toaster oven made them too crispy, and we no longer have a regular toaster, but I expect it would be pretty similar results.

The Real Question:

Thanks to @jspr for submitting this question! (Sorry that I modified your answers and didn’t use the ones with the fun references! I liked them, but wanted to test some things  )

What is QUIC
  • A UDP-based protocol that implements TCP-like features and TLS-like security with less overhead/latency
  • A framework to quickly deploy different versions of websites for multiple browsers simultaneously
  • A method of routing packets using data in the payload to dynamically find the closest available host node
  • A fast-curing brand of bacon
  • I’m not sure, but I’m excited to learn more!

The Rest:

If you’d like to be notified when there’s a new question, check out this How To guide on following tags! I also typically post in the General chatroom when they go live, so come hang out there too!

As always, if you have suggestions for future questions, improvements, or want to help out with a full question, shoot me a DM or leave a comment below!

And since you’re still reading this, don’t forget to leave me a spice-up just below this! If it’s not orange and filled-in like this → :sw_pepper: it’s not spiced up yet! It lets me know you enjoy these and gives us both points, so why not?

Well I came up with that answer QUICly.

It is multiplexed- so you can watch many movie on many screens!

It depends on when breakfast time is. I start work at 5 am so I don’t eat then. Around 8 am I’ll have a banana or protein bar. So, guess that is my breakfast.

More often than not, I am intermittent fasting, so no breakfast. But when I do, eggs and bacon, or pancakes and bacon, (or anything with bacon) is my regular go-to. And homemade pancakes with blueberries in them is the way to go! Still looking for a good low-carb alternative, but Betty Crocker’s standard recipe, substituting 1/2 the flour with fresh ground corn meal is VERY hard to beat. And, of course, real maple syrup. BTW, they freeze and reheat pretty well, too, even in a toaster oven.

I eat a full breakfast (eggs, sausage and/or bacon and some form of potatoes) both days on the weekend. I can’t be bothered with it on the weekdays, but I’ll usually have a cup of yogurt or a fruit cup around 10am when my tummy yells at me for skipping.

I always eat breakfast otherwise I don’t function well… :coffee: :bacon: :bacon: :fried_egg:
Usually coffee, BACON & eggs and something else… either oatmeal, toast, waffles, or cereal…

I recently got a ceramic flattop for the kitchen and now I’ve started cooking up some bacon, sausage, eggs in the mornings. Flat top has them cooked and ready to eat in less than 10 minutes, it’s wonderful

Breakfast is something I love but don’t have nearly as often as I would like. A QUIC breakfast I sometimes make myself is 2x scrambled eggs, fried ham, and cheese. Scramble the eggs, toss them on a plate. Throw the ham in the pan. Put cheese over the eggs. Drop the now fried ham over the cheese. Enjoy as the cheese melts and glues the ham to the eggs.

If we are being fancy, a pan of homemade biscuits* (I’m talking southern USA biscuits here), eggs, bacon, and fried taters** (proper term for fried potatoes not cut in french fry form).

The occasional Biscuits and Gravy are incredible, and I still like some eggs on the side. I modify the biscuit recipe below to make thinner biscuits in this case so they stay crispy with the gravy.

*Homemade biscuits are easily made from three ingredients: Self-rising flour (2c), salted butter (1 stick), and buttermilk (1c). Plain milk is NOT an acceptable substitute (only use 3/4c if you must try it, though it is NOT going to be as good!). I prefer a stick of butter that has been frozen, remove from the freezer five minutes before starting. Turn over on to BAKE at 500-550 (lower temps they won’t rise or brown properly). Shred the frozen butter into the flour, then stir in (coarsely). Add buttermilk 1/4c at a time, stirring in. Sprinkle some flour on parchment paper and spread out dough (about 1/2" thick). Cut out biscuits…you should get 9-12 biscuits. Place biscuits with 2-3 sides touching into a lightly floured pan (space between them means they won’t rise as well). Bake 7-11 minutes, until golden brown (oven times vary widely). Butter the tops immediately. Enjoy.

**Fried taters are best made by chopping up a leftover baked potato, then frying. If no leftover baked potatoes are available, cut up a fresh potato, nuke the pieces for about 3 minutes, then fry. Don’t be cutting those skins off!

This reminds me of this gem:

Yes! I was actually thinking of that video when typing that line. LOL I suppose I should have said that southern biscuits are “proper good”. I’m pretty sure one of the kids say that. I think they also get introduced to southern sweet tea in this video. Their initial reaction and then their surprise is hilarious.

Someday I would like to see a question where bacon is the correct answer.

I usually don’t eat breakfast, but if I do, it is normally on the weekend. Depending on how much prep I feel like doing, it will be a breakfast burrito, breakfast sandwich, or French toast.

I’m a bit of an omnivore, so if pressed for time I’ll eat leftovers, snacks, or dessert for breakfast with coffee.

But when WFH or on weekends we regularly have pancakes (chocolate chip or blueberry), bacon, fried eggs, roasted potatoes, and avocado. We do have a waffle maker that sometimes gets used, but much easier to bust out the cast iron griddle.

A protocol I have mostly blocked at the firewall.

Edit: Oh, and Sunday, I had a plate full of biscuits and sausage gravy. Yummy!

This is great. That one kid’s eyes literally light-up when he gets a taste of that biscuit-n-gravy. He gets it now. LOL

Breakfast = Unheated Pop-Tarts and a can of MD since I don’t drink coffee. Breakfast of champions.

Biscuits and gravy had become a thing here in my corner of SoCal. Having grown up in the South-East, I know something about biscuits and gravy. The stuff they server here is pretty good.

Ooohh… I was able to answer this question! h00ray! xD

Can’t blame you for not going with my suggestions either… no worries. ;D
Also totally love the fake “techno babble answer” you created. Super convincing, I almost picked it… =P

Just remember, regardless of the word used, you can

Boil ’em, Mash ’em, Stick ’em in a Stew

Ok, obviously I’m not awake yet. Even though this starts off with “Happy Wednesday,” I initially read this and also thought it was Thursday. Apparently I need more coffee.

Speaking of which, breakfast always includes coffee. On WFH days, I often have cereal with it. On in-office days, it is a package of Bel Vita breakfast cookies (not healthy, I’m sure, but that’s my habit.)
