Welcome to another SpiceQuest!

In this series, we call out current holidays and give you the chance to earn the monthly SpiceQuest badge!

(Each task can be done at any time. They don’t have to be completed on a certain holiday.)

This month we are celebrating the following holidays:

1. Cheese Weasel Day

Cheese Weasel day is a weird holiday where you give cheese to each other, but it is meant to honor techies, and I mean… I love good cheese, so always a good one.

Related Task: tell us about a techie that deserves some nice cheese.

Alternatively, if you work in a one-person shop or you just want the cheese for yourself, tell us what kind of cheese is your favorite.

2. Name Yourself Day

We are named by others often with our legal names, with nicknames, or with generalizations and titles… and sometimes we love those names and are proud of them, but not always.

Related Task: tell us what name you like best for yourself, out of existing options, or come up with your own. Always wanted a different name, or feel like you need a more superheroish name? Let us know.

Alternatively, if you don’t really care about names, it is also poetry month. Make up a haiku about work.

3. Volunteer Recognition Day

For Volunteer Recognition Day, I want to sincerely thank the volunteer moderators who helped with the recent massive spam attack, and who improve the site even when it isn’t a big extra effort like that, removing spam as soon as they come across it and helping to keep the site the great place that it is.

Related Task: tell us about the volunteers that you want to thank.

Alternatively, if you don’t have any volunteers to thank, tell us about your own volunteer activities, or where you would volunteer if you had the proper contacts and/or enough time.

4. Tell a Story Day

Stories are always great, and in IT we experience a lot of them when we respond to crazy user requests. Vote on a favorite fairy tale in our poll below, and then tell us your own story.

Related Task: tell us a funny user story that actually happened to you.

Alternatively, if you don’t have a funny story or you have shared it recently/too many times, then tell us who you would want to work for from a fairy tale. If you were the narrator, do you think you could help Rumplestiltskin with a new and better password, or protect the three bears from nosy neighbors?

5. Superhero Day

We all know that IT jobs require superpowers, so it is very important to recognize superhero day here.

Related Task: tell us what your IT Superhero catch phrase is.

Alternatively, if you don’t have a good catch-phrase, or it is not suitable for work, then tell us a superhero that you admire.

Alternatively, if there isn’t superhero that you admire, make up one of your own that you could admire. What powers would the new superhero have?

Remember to post proof of your completion of each of the quest challenges in the comments below, so that we can grant you a SpiceQuest badge when the SpiceQuest is over. All entries must be posted by April 30, 2023.

Note: As always, all entries are expected to be safe for work.

People at work who volunteer for the many activities… they do a lot that not many people realize or appreciate.

It never seems not to floor me when a user says something like “My monitor is goofy…” and they think that helps me diagnose and/or solve their problem… ugh.

  1. Cheese Weasel Day

I live in Wisconsin, so yeah, cheese. Beef jerky is a close second. When I worked in Italy my coworkers knew they had to supply me with beef jerky if they had computer issues.

  1. Name Yourself Day

Retired Navy Science Officer, rank of Commander. Commander Data, or just CDRDATA.

  1. Volunteer Recognition Day

I’m a private pilot and volunteer one day/week at the local regional airport as duty airport manager. It’s basically a club house where we share opinions, which I call the Table of Knowledge. Truthfully, my primary job is safety, and I was first responder to a crash a few years ago, very messy. My wife, Mrs. 5701, knits pet blankets for a pet charity and also scarves for abused children who often arrive at a shelter without sufficient clothing because it’s being held as evidence.

  1. Tell a Story Day

Hansel and Gretel is a real story. During the Great Famine of 1315 people resorted to cannibalism, and children were easy targets. When the witch tried to cook the kids it was a literary vehicle to steer the conversation toward witches.

  1. Superhero Day

Aren’t we all? Super5701.

So true, the volunteer work I do on the HP Community Forums provides so many examples. I can never figure out how people expect to get any kind of support when their question is simply “I cannot print”. No model of printer, no type of computer. I am often tempted to answer with “is the power out?” but we do maintain some standards so I have to quiz the user so that they will provide some answers. Often they never respond again so I have to think the power came back on or something.

I now longer work with him, but one of my mentors and I still keep in touch fairly regularly and I know he’s had a tough go at work. He definitely deserves some cheese.

  2. Name Yourself Day
My names anagrams to Dante Play which is cool, but my Scouter name means more because the kids picked it for me. I’m Baloo.

  3. Volunteer Recognition Day
I want to thank all my fellow Scouters in the world.

  4. Tell a Story Day
I had an IT Manager who kept calling it a “NIT”. This went on for months until one day when he mentioned the “NIT” about a dozen times in one conversation and I sort of lost it and said, “IT’S A NIC! N I C!, NOT N I T, NIT!”.

  5. Superhero Day
Catch phrase: “Sorry my crystal ball has been in the shop”.

1. Cheese Weasel Day

Alternatively, if you work in a one-person shop or you just want the cheese for yourself, tell us what kind of cheese is your favorite.

I like a nice Gruyère, melted and browned on a nice French Onion Soup.

2. Name Yourself Day

Related Task: tell us what name you like best for yourself, out of existing options, or come up with your own. Always wanted a different name, or feel like you need a more superheroish name? Let us know.

Can I use the fact that I can’t go by my first name at work? My boss has the same first name in our three-tech shop, same spelling too, so I have to go by one of my middle names.

3. Volunteer Recognition Day

Alternatively, if you don’t have any volunteers to thank, tell us about your own volunteer activities, or where you would volunteer if you had the proper contacts and/or enough time.

I used to volunteer to handle IT for a local charity where I used to live, and it was nice work to do, but had to end it when I switched jobs and the new employer put a no-compete clause in the contract that he said included volunteer work.

4. Tell a Story Day

Alternatively, if you don’t have a funny story or you have shared it recently/too many times, then tell us who you would want to work for from a fairy tale. If you were the narrator, do you think you could help Rumplestiltskin with a new and better password, or protect the three bears from nosy neighbors?

I’d love to do IT for sleeping beauty. Very little demand, and the boss is OK with naps on the job.

5. Superhero Day

What did you do this time?

Smoked Swiss is my favorite but I haven’t had it in awhile.

2. Name Yourself Day Related Task: tell us what name you like best for yourself, out of existing options, or come up with your own. Always wanted a different name, or feel like you need a more superheroish name? Let us know.

I always like being referred to as IT Wizard

3. Volunteer Recognition Day Related Task: tell us about the volunteers that you want to thank.

I think the people who volunteer at the local pregnancy center and homeless shelter are admirable

4. Tell a Story Day Related Task: tell us a funny user story that actually happened to you.

Had a user at a branch location call that they were getting an admin prompt. Help desk tried to talk her through it. Eventually I went out and discovered they had a book on the ESC key so it kept going to the BIOS which was password protected. I removed the book and the computer worked fine. At least I got paid mileage.

5. Superhero Day Related Task: tell us what your IT Superhero catch phrase is.

  1. Cheese Weasel Day

Tell us about a techie that deserves some nice cheese.

A - 2 techies that I want to give a block of cheese to are my 2 previous co-workers Chris and Davy! Those guys are still good friends of mine taught me a lot early on in my career!

  1. Name Yourself Day

Tell us what name you like best for yourself…

A - Some people don’t know my real name. Some people do know my real name and still call me by my pseudonym. I prefer usually that people call me Randy or Randall. Randy was my nickname growing up. Some people also call me just Macho or Macho Man.

  1. Volunteer Recognition Day

Tell us about the volunteers that you want to thank.

A - I would like to give a cheers to our service members. Air Force, Army, Marines, Coast Guard, Navy, and everyone currently serving! Its a tall task but im glad we have people willing to do it.

  1. Tell a Story Day

Tell us a funny user story that actually happened to you…

1. Cheese Weasel Day

Being a Department of one, I get to keep all the cheese.

My favorite of late is a nice young Gouda.Almost soft enough to spread.

2. Name Yourself Day

I have a couple of nicknames.

When I get called “Al” it is always by someone from my previous life in Rugby. It always makes me feel nostalgic.

But as of late, I like when I am called “Sherman”. It is a nickname I acquired about 14 years ago. It is used so often that people do not even know my real name. My own son will use it frequently. So much so that one time while visiting family he used it several times to get my attention. So frequent that my sister inquired of my brother “Why does he call him Sherman”?

  1. Volunteer Recognition Day.

There are so many volunteers to thank out there. And to those who do, " THANK YOU ! "

I volunteer with a Search and Rescue group. We have been called upon to look for people lost in the wilderness as well as those who have drowned. The drownings are the tough ones. Everything has to be handled quietly, which I appreciate the respect it shows.

  1. Tell a Story Day

The “Other” Fairy Tale that is,although not my favorite, but the one I hear too often is:

The Story of the Magic Budget"

Once upon a time there was a budget. Not just any budget, but an IT budget. The owner of the Company had put back monies to be used on updating computers and servers. Along came a Salesman who told them that what they needed instead of new computers and servers, “That don’t make the Company any money”, that what they needed was a new machine that made magical widgets that could be exchanged for money. The Owner bought this new machine. When the machine was being installed, the installers needed to connect it to the network. But “Oh No” the network couldn’t support the new machine. This would require new computers and servers. So the machine only runs at a fraction of it’s potential output, and the ROI is years instead of months. The IT budget had magically disappeared, which put the IT department on a “break - fix” routine, THE END

  1. Superhero Day

Superhero catch phrase: " I’ll be right over."

This usually results in whatever the problem was to repair itself.

Because I am obsessed with cheese, I’ll take this one  my all time favourite would have to be Roquefort

2. Name Yourself Day

Related Task: tell us what name you like best for yourself, out of existing options, or come up with your own. Always wanted a different name, or feel like you need a more superheroish name? Let us know.

My proper name is James, but I’ve always preferred it when people call me Jimmy or Jim as I think it is just a nice sounding name

3. Volunteer Recognition Day

Alternatively, if you don’t have any volunteers to thank, tell us about your own volunteer activities, or where you would volunteer if you had the proper contacts and/or enough time.

I would love it if I had enough time to help out the local animal charities, but I’m just so busy all the time!

4. Tell a Story Day

Related Task: tell us a funny user story that actually happened to you.

There are so many, especially from my days working in IT support and on the helpdesk. One of the more ridiculous requests was when a student came into the office with a completely broken personal laptop, and had the guts to ask me to phone John Lewis for him to check the warranty on it!

5. Superhero Day

My new name is “Bob”

A good palindrome for sure

Plus, it’s how I swim

  1. Volunteer Recognition Day

Alternatively, if you don’t have any volunteers to thank, tell us about your own volunteer activities, or where you would volunteer if you had the proper contacts and/or enough time.

I was volunteering at a nursing home a while back, doing tech work there for the residents and then helping serve food at meals. It was fun and a way to give back.

  1. Tell a Story Day

Related Task: tell us a funny user story that actually happened to you.

I still remember the computer owner that brought their computer in to have some more “megachimps” installed in her “modium”. This was probably back in 97 or 98.

  1. Superhero Day

Related Task: tell us what your IT Superhero catch phrase is.

I’ll go with the classic from IT Crowd: “Have you tried turning it off and on again?”

3 Spice ups

1. Cheese Weasel Day

I’m going to be greedy (not because there aren’t techies that deserve recognition, but because I love cheese) and say that my favourite kind of cheese would have to be marbled cheese, specifically marbled mozzarella and cheddar. That said, I like most cheeses, and I look forward to trying some new ones when I head to Germany on my vacation in September.

2. Name Yourself Day

I like my online name, because it reflects my appreciation for Rush, and I’ve just come to associate it with me. Likewise, I am quite content with my given name, and don’t see a reason why I would change it.

I’ll also fulfil the alternate task because I want to:

The machine goes clunk.

What could have broken inside?

Foul demon of tech.

Tear apart each piece.

But nothing there is misplaced

Hidden in its depths.

“Everything is fine.”

The naive worker puzzles

Could it be the tray?

Risking life and limb

The hero prods the demon

And finds wedged paper

Victory at last!

The user has been chastised.

The printer is tamed.

I might or might not have a seething anger for users who slam the printer tray too hard and knock the guides out of alignment. Just maybe.

3. Volunteer Recognition Day

I would want to thank all the volunteers at my church (including myself), who keep the services running. It can be thankless at points, but we each have a part to play in keeping every Sunday (and Good Friday, and Christmas Eve) going smoothly.

4. Tell a Story Day

I have two stories. One literally just happened to me right now, the other didn’t happen to me, but to my coworker.

For me, I was asked less than three minutes ago if I could convert a PDF to a PowerPoint presentation because the user “needed it” to work on dealer meeting stuff or another. This is not the first time a request like this has happened, as we’ve been asked to convert HEIC images to JPG because they can’t spend the three seconds googling it themselves. It blows my mind some people are this lazy.

The other story is that before I started working here, my one coworker had to reset a person’s password, and he told her the new password. She typed it in. Then naught but a minute later, when she had to log into Outlook, she didn’t remember her password. That he gave her. He was literally still there, and she forgot the password, basically as she was typing it in. I simply don’t know how someone like that can function in society, let alone a job with any computer requirements.

5. Superhero Day

“Have you tried turning it off and on again?”

  1. Cheese Weasel Day

I don’t work in a one person shop, but the people I work with are lactose intolerant, so I’ll just keep the cheese for myself. I prefer the Baby Bell Low Sodium (blue tag) cheese in my lunch pail right now. But, I’m also fond of the Mexican Shredded Cheese blend I use to make nachos…

  1. Name Yourself Day

I like the “royal” name games that come out whenever there is a Royal wedding or another baby being born to the royal family. The funniest name that I had was Lady Twiggy of Holiday Court.

  1. Volunteer Recognition Day

The volunteers who clean beaches, forest, hiking trails, lakes, rivers, etc. are tops in my book.

  1. Tell a Story Day

Recurring nightmare count? I feel like it is Groundhog Day (the movie). User calls (or texts or emails) to say “OK, I just accepted the MFA for you”. Only, I wasn’t working on anything for the user and didn’t do anything with their account to trigger MFA. I then spend the rest of the nightmare trying to reset their password with a stick of chewing gum and a piece of hair (MacGyver).

  1. Superhero Day

My superhero would have the ability to flip the script on the ransomware bad guys. She could reverse the bitcoin transfers, unencrypt the data, delete the stolen information from the bad guys’ computers (heck even erase all of the bad guys’ computers), and send the bad guys to a purgatory jail where they only have dial-up access to prodigy servers that only play Tetris. Her name: MakeUWannaCry.

5 Spice ups
  1. Cheese Weasel Day: Favorite cheese is Swiss. I also like fresh mozzarella in a caprese salad!

  2. Name Yourself Day: Watched Family Feud one day and a lady’s name was O’i (sounds like ooh eee). Steve Harvey had the worst time pronouncing it and it cracked me up. Means sharp in Hawaiian…pretty cool! I’d love a name like that.
Sidenote: I’ve always been one of those people that others love to give nicknames to. All of high school and even those same friends after, called me Myrtle, which came from me reading aloud The Great Gatsby in English class.

  3. Volunteer Recognition Day: Some jerk in our neighborhood decided to tote a wheelbarrow full of trash (mostly brightly colored plastic plant pots) and dump it right outside the woods behind my house. I kept looking at those pots and thinking about how I was going to pick them up and put them back at his house but never got around to it. Then one day I see this tiny lady walking around with a trash bag, cleaning up any garbage she finds including those pots. She’s my superhero!

  4. Tell a Story Day: I’d like to add Puss in Boots to the favorite fairy tale list.

I know I have a ton of funny stories that have happened to me, but whenever someone puts me on the spot I cannot remember one to save my life! All that comes to mind are the awful ones…what does that say about me?? Let’s see…um…not a work story, but….I recently bought my stepson an Ancestry DNA test kit he wanted. We kept asking if he got the results yet and then I asked, “You did put a return address on it or sign up online, didn’t you?” His jaw dropped. I said, “so you thought you just spit in a tube and mail it off blindly and they know who you are?!” Geesh, 20-somethings these days!

Workwise, I work with a guy that kept saying LAN line in reference to phones and I kept thinking I heard him wrong until he actually typed it out in an email. I responded back referencing landline this and landline that. Hopefully, he picked up on it.

  1. Superhero Day: “Let me automagically figure out and configure this new software you purchased without checking with IT first! Ta Da!!!”
3 Spice ups

1. Cheese Weasel Day

I tried the whole Cheese Weasel thing for a few years, but it never went over well with my staff, so I gave up on that. I like a bleu cheese in a salad dressing, or a nice freshy grated romano cheese as a topping, or a nice marbled block of a sharp longhorn cheddar. But my favorite would have to be nacho cheese. Of course, I’m only guessing that it is actually cheese.c6f19b78-a62f-426a-a20d-7c952704cf3e-nacho_cheese.gif

2. Name Yourself Day

I do like the xkcd parents who named their little boy ‘Bobby Tables’. A few years back we were asked at work to include our personal pronouns in our email signature so people would know how to refer to us. I explained to HR that I don’t have any personal pronouns as I would prefer if people just didn’t ever refer to me. That did not go well. So just give me a blank badge, and if nobody knows my name it will cut down on emails and phone calls.

And I’m not much on haikus, so how about a limerick:

There once was a man with no name.
As a job, IT was his fame.
His badge was a blank,
None knew who to thank.
But his legendary skill was fame.

3. Volunteer Recognition Day

Nothing to do with IT, but I really appreciate and feel sorry for our local volunteer fire department. I like in a very rural area. All of the nearby towns are very small and only have volunteer fire departments/first responders. Now, keep in mind, these towns are miles from where I live, and the nearest cities are 30+ minutes away. So, our neighbors decided this was a great place to put an extremely dangerous and life-threatening sporting facility. That is, a dirt bike track. So, when someone crashes, falls, off, or has an accident, first responders are typically 10 minutes out, and an ambulance is 30minutes away. The type of stuff these volunteers have to cope with, and the abuse they suffer from angry parents and others because they aren’t highly trained professional medical staff is incredible.

4. Tell a Story Day

Funny? I don’t know. Now “ridiculous” there are many. Had a user just last week send in a picture of their laptop screen showing this rather pretty bulls-eye pattern of cracks and LCD color rings and complaining that they can’t use it anymore. Upon questioning them, they were totally baffled. The laptop was working just fine that morning while they were out in the field. The put it in their backpack and when they got back to the office and took it out it looked like this. They are sure there was no impact, they didn’t drop or hit the backpack against anything, in fact the stack of papers and the pen they put between the keyboard and lid were still right there when they took the laptop out of the bag . . .

As far as fairy tale bosses, I’m not sure if the fairy godmother’s union local 501 needs any IT support fixing buggy wands or anything, but I figured that might be a good job, until I watch Shrek 2. Now, for the three bears, I would doubt out in the woods like they were if they really had any nosy neighbors withing range of their home wi-fi. But as far as keeping little blonde girls from hacking into his account I would remind Rumpelstiltskin to never to use his name or any part of it when creating a strong password. Also, he should stay away from using worlds like “straw” or “gold”.

5. Superhero Day

Based on #2, the obvious catch phrase is “Who was that masked man?”

Cheese Weasel day is a weird holiday where you give cheese to each other, but it is meant to honor techies, and I mean… I love good cheese, so always a good one.

I think everyone in my department and everyone at and on Spiceworks deserves a visit from the Cheese Weasel!

2. Name Yourself Day
I combined both tasks and had chatGPT write a Haiku about nick names at work:
Nicknames at the job,
Friendly banter and respect,
Bonding with teammates.

3. Volunteer Recognition Day
The volunteer I would thank is my son, for being flexible enough to just do what was needed. He was volunteering to be the bass player in the worship band at church. When they needed a drummer, so he learned to play the drums. He learned to play piano when the piano player left. Then learned to sing and lead worship when the leader left. After awhile, they could find a replacement piano player, but needed guitarist, so he learned guitar. -FYI, this happened over a period of a several years, people are not just up and quitting every other day.

4. Tell a Story Day
Tell us a funny user story that actually happened to you.
When I was working desktop support and had my cell phone with me I got a phone call. At the time, I had my ring tone set to sound like a modem handshake. One of the users in that department heard it and exclaimed to me in surprise, “Are we dial-up here!?!” (He was actually young enough that he would probably never even had a dial-up connection at home, or anywhere else). I told him “Yes, and I carry it around in my pocket.”

5. Superhero Day

4. Tell a Story Day

Phone call this weekend about a power outage. Call was 24 hours later and a spreadsheet with lots of changes was lost. Asked why he didn’t open the lid to his laptop and save. Said he wanted to use the “big monitor” but that didn’t have power so he just walked away.

5. Superhero Day

  1. Cheese Weasel Day

Favorite cheese is probably Mozza, although I really enjoy provolone and marble and occasionally aged cheddar.

  1. Name Yourself Day

I like my name. I am proud of who my parents named me.

  1. Volunteer Recognition Day

There are many volunteers I would like to thank, but don’t have the time to put out all their names. There are so many volunteers that help the poor, disenfranchised, widows, and disabled. There are many first-responders and specialists that help in more ways than most of us will know. There are soldiers & veterans, while they may get paid, they volunteer to fight for us and our freedom.

  1. Tell a Story Day

Helping the 3 bears with better security could be fun.

  1. Superhero Day

Capt America was admirable as it was about doing right. He was honorable.

4 Spice ups
  1. Cheese Weasel day

With so many people working from home or on hybrid schedules, we can’t forget the four-legged coworkers that keep us motivated while at home. If anyone deserves a little cheese, it should go to the dogs of the IT work force! Plus, who likes cheese more than dogs?

  1. Name Yourself day

If I had to give myself a new name I would choose something like Wharf Beast. I think it is funny and somewhat of an antithesis to my personality. Thought provoking!

  1. Volunteer Recognition day

I want to give a shout out to all the companies that allow employees to take a day to volunteer in their communities. Most people you ask would probably say that they would volunteer if they had enough time or the right contacts. Those employers that allow employees to give back during company time are eliminating those excuses and giving people a chance to actually act instead of saying “I would, but…”. I am lucky enough to work somewhere that promotes this type of volunteerism.

  1. Tell a Story day

If I had to work for someone from a fairytale, I would choose to work in Yubaba’s bath house from Spirited Away. While it is not a “traditional” fairytale, Spirited Away certainly has enough elements that are generally associated with fairytales that this film would count. The aesthetic is very pleasing, and even though you have to sign away your soul, you get to live in a beautiful bathhouse for the rest of your life. Not Bad!

  1. Superhero day

While this doesn’t really fix or answer anything, one of my favorite catchphrases to use is “That’s just how computers are sometimes”. This lets the users know that you understand the devices on a deeper level, recognizing quirks and such (just joking!). Typically I use this response when a problem self-resolves and it looks like your presence was all that was needed. Could be superpowers, or just a glitch.
