Welcome to another SpiceQuest!

In this series, we call out current holidays and give you the chance to earn the monthly SpiceQuest badge!

(Each task can be done at any time. They don’t have to be completed on a certain holiday.)

This month we are celebrating the following holidays:

1. Pepper Month

Holy cats, seriously? How did I never know this was a thing before? We should be celebrating this all month, every year. Hmm… what should Pepper month be about though? New badges, extra points, dressing up as our favorite pepper? Should we adapt the Dr. Pepper commercial song for our site (“wouldn’t you like to be a pepper too?”) Also vote in our poll below on the age old question of badges or points.

Related Task: what do you think is an appropriate way to celebrate Pepper month in our community?

Alternatively, if you aren’t really into the spirit of Pepper month, what other November event would you like to see celebrated?

2. Family Stories / Life Writing month

There are a lot of writing related holidays in November, and these two go together pretty well. You know those stories that you’ve heard over and over from your family members? Why not write them down and share them with the next generation?

Related Task: what is a story that you want to pass on?

Alternatively, if you don’t have any stories you want to pass on, what other legacy would you want to leave for people in the future?

3. Dear Santa Week

I know it seems like I am getting ahead of the month-appropriate holidays here, but Dear Santa week is in early November so that Santa has time to read your list and build all of those toys.

Related Task: what are you asking Santa for this year?

Alternatively, if you don’t believe in Santa, then imagine some future replicator-like technology that could give you whatever you want. What would you ask for then?

4. Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a traditional time to give thanks for what we have, even in years that haven’t been too kind.

Related Task: what are you thankful for this year?

Alternatively, if you’re finding it hard to be thankful, just tell us whether this year has been better or worse than 2020.

5. Red Planet Day / Computer Security Day

I love Mars. It might be because of all of the Science Fiction I have read, but still, it seems cool. I like Pluto because it seems picked on, but Mars is rich with the possibility that we could actually colonize it someday.

Related Task: if we fast forwarded a couple of centuries and you were offered a job on Mars, would you go?

Alternatively, if you don’t really like Mars, or your imagination is much bigger than just our solar system, where in the universe would you think about moving instead?

Remember to post proof of your completion of each of the quest challenges in the comments below, so that we can post a nice November SpiceQuest badge for you when the SpiceQuest is over. All entries must be posted by November 30, 2022.

Note: As always, all entries are expected to be safe for work.

  1. Listening to the red hot chilli peppers. Ok not entirely to my tastes but theres some good tracks there. But tbh we celebrate Guy Fawkes in the UK. I’m not sure why we celebrate a failure

  2. No real stories. As for legacy, just being remembered for anything good would be something

3)If I could have what I wanted a health condition free body! World peace/coming together. Theres no real objects I desire rather than my own place to live.

  1. Half of 2020 I had to isolate, and we’re still feeling the punishing results of 2020 now - with supply shortages so 2022 cannot be as bad as 2020 - though I do miss the group gaming we did.

  2. I think with Mars, it depends on the risk, I still have medical issues so its a big factor in the equation. But the solar system and the universe generally is amazing.

We like it spicy here.

  1. Family Stories / Life Writing month

I tried to raise my sons with one concept. You must show love and discipline. Sometimes it’s not 50/50 but you have try and balance both very carefully. I think if you do that the kids will turn out ok.

  1. Dear Santa Week

Either I win the lotto or get a new job. Dec 1st will be 22 years. Might be time to move on.

  1. Thanksgiving

I am thankful that my mom is still around, but we don’t know for how much longer. I’ve lost all my grandparents and my dad, so she is it.

  1. Red Planet Day / Computer Security Day

It’s interesting that years ago some of the things we have predicted in TV/Movies have come to realization. So, Mars maybe possible in the coming years. My job on Mars would have to be no stress so I think I’ll just be a bartender like in Total Recall.

1. Pepper Month
Related Task: what do you think is an appropriate way to celebrate Pepper month in our community?
I think the proper way to handle Pepper Month in the community is for SpiceHeads to nominate their favourite, or least, Spiceworker, and the nominees with the most votes make a video eating the peppers used as ranks until only the spiciest Spiceworker is left.:smiling_imp:

2. Family Stories / Life Writing month
Related Task: what is a story that you want to pass on?
Not exactly a story… but one time there was an event where my dad’s years of service was being honored… and someone was talking about how much he knew in his field… he said “Asking John for a little information is like taking a sip of water from a fire hydrant.”

3. Dear Santa Week
Related Task: what are you asking Santa for this year?
Nothing exciting, I just need new stuff that costs money… so I’ll ask for… probably money since I don’t think his toyshop can make an electric razor.

4. US Thanksgiving
Related Task: what are you thankful for this year?
I’m thankful that I’m in Canada and we already had thanksgiving in Oct. and that Cthurkey is only a thing in the US.

Dressing up as a pepper… For a whole month? I dare say most of the peppers would be fully “ripe” by then

Whoever can eat the hottest pepper without any drink.

Live by the golden rule. This is something I was raised on and I hope it continues to get passed on from my kids to their kids.

  1. Biggest laugh award. I think there should be a pepper badge awarded to the top 5 funniest posts/replies. And of course Free Dr. Pepper for all! The drink of intellectuals.

  2. The story about my great great grandfather winning a trophy for longest distance ridden on a penny farthing. My mother has the photo somewhere!

  3. I will be asking Santa for a new gaming laptop to replace my worn out Asus one. It has served me well.

  4. I’m thankful for a lot of things, but most of all that I have a caring family looking out for me when I need it.

  5. Yes, but only if I can bring the family ha. If it’s on my own, nah, too far.

3 Spice ups

1) Pepper Month:

I think there’s been a inordinate amount of time spent on peppers throughout the year, I think we should think about all those poor shunned and ignored spices out there who only get used during the holidays. I think we need to be thinking of the other spices like Nutmeg, Cinnamon, and Anise. I of course could be just anticipating eggnog season, don’t hate on me about the eggnog, I hear people actually make spices out of pumpkins…

2) Family Stories

My sister losing her brownie cap

Kicking howler monkeys out of our boat

There’s so, so many more fun ones, but I recently lost my brother to cancer. His perspective on what’s important while on his way out of this mortal realm is worth passing on.

3. Dear Santa Week

I think I want to build my own replicator, so I think I need a CNC router and a 3D printer. And maaaybe a copy of SketchUp.

4. Thanksgiving

I’m pretty thankful for just about everything these days, mostly thankful to still be here. ; )

5. Red Planet Day / Computer Security Day

I think I’m going to stick to this planet if we haven’t completely ruined it by then. Otherwise, give me a similar class M, preferably with a blue sky and no Avatar like atmosphere. I think living on Mars with no atmosphere would be similar to living in cubeville here. ; )

Oh, and while we’re combining the two, we should do Red teams! However let’s not all wear matching red shirts when we go planetside, I’ve seen what happens…

4 Spice ups
  1. I’m all about the spicy recipes. If we do that, I’ll probably post my recipe for habanero venison backstrap.

  2. So I’m sure a lot of you have heard the old joke about the British, American, and French military staff at a meeting in Paris, and the French guy complaining about why everything is being done in English. The British man says “If it weren’t for us and the Yanks you’d all be speaking German.” My grandfather was the American Lt. Col. in that conversation, it happened at a NATO conference in 1961. My grandmother told all kinds of great stories from their time on that side of the pond, 1961-1963. My grandfather also bought Amphicars (amphibious cars) and had them shipped back to the US where he opened up a dealership for them in San Antonio. One of those is currently on display in the hill country at the LBJ ranch. Yes, he sold the infamous Amphicar to Lyndon B. Johnson that was used to scare guests at his ranch.

  3. Let’s use the replicator idea, I’d be replicating bundles of cash.

  4. Thankful for all the supportive friends and family as I’ve made a lot of changes in my life this year. The acceptance, especially from my Unitarian Universalist church family, has been amazing.

  5. I’d gladly head off to Mars. I’m sure somebody will have POS systems I can fix!

1. Pepper Month

Related Task: what do you think is an appropriate way to celebrate Pepper month in our community?

Eating lots of spicy food. Like every month, really.

2. Family Stories / Life Writing month

Alternatively, if you don’t have any stories you want to pass on, what other legacy would you want to leave for people in the future?

Now that I’m working in Education again, It’s nice to think that I’ve (indirectly) contributed to hundreds of kids learning/developing over their time here. I’d want that to be my legacy, that I silently kept things running for their benefit.

3. Dear Santa Week

Related Task: what are you asking Santa for this year?

A new wheel for sim rig

4. Thanksgiving

Alternatively, if you’re finding it hard to be thankful, just tell us whether this year has been better or worse than 2020.

Higher paying job, more freedom to exist outside of my house etc. I’d say better.

5. Red Planet Day / Computer Security Day

Related Task: if we fast forwarded a couple of centuries and you were offered a job on Mars, would you go?

Maybe. It would depend on the job. I wouldn’t want to commute either

How should we celebrate pepper month? break the law and force the police to spray you in the face because you won’t back down!

The person with the most infractions wins

But you cannot break the law so bad that it lands you with jail time because that will eat into your getting sprayed in the face count.

  1. Pepper Month

What do you think is an appropriate way to celebrate Pepper month in our community?
A: Pepper Plushie contest! We need some pepper plushies to possibly win!

  1. Family Stories / Life Writing month

What is a story that you want to pass on?
A: Life’s not about figuring it out right away. Things will take time and you will find your purpose eventually. Don’t sweat the small things!

  1. Dear Santa Week

What are you asking Santa for this year?
A: I’m thinking a new keyboard for my home PC!

  1. Thanksgiving

What are you thankful for this year?
A: Time with family and friends! Also the food haha

  1. Red Planet Day / Computer Security Day

1. What do you think is an appropriate way to celebrate Pepper month in our community?

I love Dr. Pepper so adopting the commercial song would be hilarious. But new badges would be good too.

2. What other legacy would you want to leave for people in the future?

I’m still trying to figure this one out.

3. Imagine some future replicator-like technology that could give you whatever you want. What would you ask for then?

Teleportation. I would love to just be able to go anywhere quickly. To be able to go to see my family in other countries for dinner and than be back in my own bed at night or meeting friends in other states for lunch and then head back home right after.

4. Tell us whether this year has been better or worse than 2020.

Way better.

5. If we fast forwarded a couple of centuries and you were offered a job on Mars, would you go?

Definitely. I don’t want to be in the first or second group to go but centuries later after it’s been tested out I’d for sure go.

3 Spice ups
  1. Pepper Month - Something akin to an episode of Hot Ones (chicken wings with ever increasingly spicy hot sauce on them)

  2. Family Stories - Always let your loved ones know how much they mean to you. Life is short and one day you won’t be able to anymore.

  3. Dear Santa - Honestly, just safe travels over the holiday traveling season. For a materialistic “gift” with no price limit, a new car. My 14-yr old beater is showing its age.

  4. Thanksgiving - Thankful for a loving and stable family. I have many friends that have a broken family situation so I appreciate what I have.

  5. Red Planet Day - The snarky side of me would say in a couple centuries, I’ll be dead and dust so no I wouldn’t move. But in the spirit of the thought exercise, heck yeah I’d move to Mars if given the opportunity.

3 Spice ups

1. Bowing down and worshipping our fellow Capsaicin’s.

2. Not necessarily a story but I’d love to pass down proper manners and good morals, also learn how to not offend anybody (just don’t talk.).

3. I wish Santa could just write me a big fat paycheck, I don’t know what I’d want so he certainly wouldn’t, I could probably figure it out though if I had a fat check in front of me.

4. I’m thankful for family per usual and also for my job, was given this position after my warehouse position, they took a shot in the dark with me and I’ve hopefully exceeded expectations.

5. If the technology is right and we are able to move freely on the planet sure, imagine being on a new planet with a fresh start being the first to explore any and everything in person, that would be some wild stuff.
