Its not even been stolen by a sitter, the who is suggests a block to cyber squatters. Imagine if you accidentally wrote www.spiceworks.xxx instead of www.spiceworks.com . Purely accidental of course.

That seems pretty normal for businesses to do these days for the simple purpose that once a site gets popular then it becomes a target for scammers, spammers, and even porn. A simple mistype of an address from someone who has never visited the site could land a person on a web page they were not expecting giving bad PR.
By purchasing the xxx and not using it, SW has ensured that no one else can buy it and become the equivalent of major porn website overnight with the “SpiceWorks” name attached to it which to get back later more than likely would cost a lot of money and lawyers.
It’s actually a smart business move. Seen a lot of Universities recently do the same, which really makes sense for them because it wouldn’t take long for every young male over hormoned adult to go, “hey I wonder if there’s a UW-Blank.xxx with all the hot college chicks”…
Make sense?

How does someone accidentally type .xxx?

lol, good one, but really it wouldn’t be typing it, it would be the autocomplete that gets most people.
Or even a google search and depending on the rank…

i still wonder if it is indeed spiceworks that own this domain however.
just completely curious really.

Look it up on WhoIs . That’ll tell who owns the space.
I’m at work, so I won’t do it for you.
