I have had an interesting thought lately looking at some of the Spiceworks contests and got kind of curious where you draw the line(s) on what to do with what you win. Some of the stuff I see it’s like this would be cool to put in production, or at least try and see how it works and if you do really want to put it in production. Some of the stuff though in some cases looks really tempting for use in a lab setup at work or home.
I know a few cases some contests are more like win this gear for a virtualization LAB, win this drone for whatever you want. It kind of got me curious what people do with some of this stuff, and sometimes I think something may be cool to try, but maybe it’s not ideal for production, etc then what does it go into a lab setup, does it go into the geek junk drawer at work or end up at home used for something or other.
Desk toys, nick nacks, clothes, etc I am all for doing whatever with work desk home desk, car, whatever. My case I’m a tech so some of the stuff would probably need ok from my admin, but we have used for all kinds of stuff servers, drones, network stuff, etc. My thought is if we decide it’s not for us then give it to the networking teacher for their classes, etc. Drone for drone class, etc.
Just curious what others do, or thoughts.

Depends on the stuff. I’ve mostly gotten little things so mostly non-work related. I use my VMware branded Jambox Mini to supplement the speakers on my computer, used it briefly as audio for my car (actually pretty decent) until I got a bluetooth radio adapter and for stuff I want a little extra oomph for. Haven’t touched my Spicework drinking glass since I don’t drink and rather not mess it up. I haven’t really won anything where I would draw the line at.
I try not to enter stuff I wouldn’t be able to really use. I’m stuck working contract work right now (about all there is around here and very little at that) so I’m not going to enter a contest for a server or big NAS or something. Sure, I’d love a couple TB’s of storage personally and could probably put it to use but I’d rather someone who can use it for business get it.

It depends a bit on the item; but I do occasionally pass things around staff in the IT department (because I’m generous like that!).
If it was suitable bit of hardware, that would go to the business.

I keep it all for myself. They can win their own damn stuff!

this is how i feel most of the time. but ive only won things that could be used as personal stuff.

If it has a legitimate business use and will double as a contest, then I’ll sometimes give it a go. If not, I pass. If it’s a little knick-knack and has a low barrier for entry (no trials, etc.) I go ahead with it.
