Out of the clear blue this morning, when I try launching spiceworks desktop, the splash screen appears with progress bar is only moving about 1/2 inch. Spiceworks is starting… but does not. I rebooted, made sure nothing else was loading etc and still does not start.
Spiceworks desktop and service have been running on my Windows XP workstation ( http://lance:8181 ) for serveral months and this is the first time I have experienced it not starting. The spiceworks service starts under service manager but the deskop will not launch.
Need help.

Were there any Windows updates installed? We had what seems to be exactly what you described happen after Windows updates were loaded on our server that runs Spiceworks. My server guy tried uninstalling the updates, but no success. Ended-up backing up the Spiceworks database, then re-installing Spiceworks, then restoring the database - a bit of a pain, but that did the trick. Good Luck!
This is a new one. Can you try the following steps:
-
Stop Spiceworks if it’s running (right click on the tray icon and select exit)
-
Open Windows Task Manager and end the following processes if they are still running.
spiceworks.exe
SpiceTray.exe
spiceworks-finder.exe
- Restart Spiceworks
Let me know how this goes. If you still can’t start please answer the below questions and we’ll move forward
- What is the OS of the machine you are running Spiceworks on
- What browser and version are you running?
- Does the Spicetray show up?
Thanks!
I manually installed the new Version 2.1.18955 and magically the desktop now launches again. Also, more magic to report - I had two unknowns that now scan and report since the upgrade.
I am finding out the new Spiceworks version 2.1 is supposed to automatically install. Dumb me did not know that. Maybe what appeared to be a non-responsive desktop launch was really the system trying to update in the background?
In response to BDS1959, I’m sure updates were applied to my system running Spiceworks. I am running the Spiceworks server on my Windows XP workstation. We get auto MS OS updates at least once a month.
I’m getting the same problem since Spiceworks updated to v2.1.
I’ve tried the above, but still get just the splash screen saying ‘Starting Server’, but no progress.
I’m using Server 2003 SP2 Standard with IE7. Spicetray does show up.
LANCEM I’m glad to hear you’re up and running again.
Diagknows, is there any chance you could restart the server?
Started having issues again today. In trying to troubleshoot, I tried stopping and starting the Spiceworks Service. During the Stop Service I get an Error 6: The handle is invalid. Click on OK and the service stops. Try to re-start the service and get an Error 230: The pipe state is invalid. Beginning to wonder if there isn’t a bug in the Spiceworks Service. I can clean boot and the service will automatically start.

This is most definitely alarming. Can you please send us a support request at support@spiceworks.com and reference this thread along with sending in your log files.

Hi - I’d also like to know if there’s a solution to this problem. Ever since installing SP2 on Server 2003 I have had problems starting/restarting the Spiceworks service. Today I simply cannot get it to start.
It’s running as a local service, and stopping all processes, deleting the spiceworks service, restarting the server and reinstalling the software does nothing. All I get is this 230 error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I just fixed this issue, Spiceworks was stuck trying to start. This happened after a regular maintenance reboot. I had tried everything I could think of. I then checked the preferences and noticed that it was launching using a username/password… A few weeks ago, we changed the password due to a employee dismissal… DUH!! Re-entered the password and WALLA!!
