I like to do a lot of writing and drawing by hand, but boy do I go through some paper. So much of it is brain dumping ideas, so a ton of quick sketches that take up a whole page and most of gets tossed out. When I saw the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil, it looks like it could replace a lot of paper waste, at least eliminating the bulk of the sketching brainstorming.
I know I’ve seen people drawing on the iPad Pro and Surface Pro. Has anyone used these, and are they good for sketching, and also detailed enough to write text by hand?

I’ve heard the Surface Pros with the pens are actually perfect for this, because the resolution is so high on the surfaces.
You might really dig this app then: Sketchable - Official app in the Microsoft Store
I’m by no means an artist, but there is a lot you can do with Windows 10 on the Surface Pro 4 with a pen and Windows Ink . Check out the link for more info on Windows Ink.

What kind of drawing are we talking about? The professionals I know all use Wacom Cintiq or Intuos drawing tablets for their heavy detail work and an iPad Pro for more cartoony stuff - assuming they work in digital media at all. Lots of 'em still work on paper and have high-quality scanners for digital conversion.
Hey @stevenorble2803 - Just to throw another suggestion into the hat, you might want to take a look the HP ENVY 8 Note. The stylus design makes it ideal for note-taking and the tablet has a Notes Hub so you can keep things organized. If you’re open to other suggestions, you can take a look at more details on the ENVY 8 here: http://store.hp.com/us/en/mdp/Laptops/hp-envy-8-note-374012--1#!&Tab=features Let me know if I can answer any questions for you!
Yeah, nothing professional level at all. My personal hobby, brainstorming, day dreaming in the form of low quality black and white comic book sketches, capturing some gestaltic relationship of an idea in 30 seconds or less, or just some doodling to zone out. Mainly looking at options to stop buying boxes of paper, and in the past the main drawback of tablets was the tablets and pens were not quite detailed enough for small writing the same way you can write a paragraph on paper. Maybe I just need to find a store with one on display that I can try out.

iPad Pro is probably your best option here - but do remember that “writing” with a computer is generally assumed to involve “typing”. Microsoft Ink lets you jot quick hand-written notes on the updated version of Sticky Notes - but that’s exactly what you do with dead-tree Post-It™ Notes. You don’t write novels (or even paragraphs, and possibly not even full sentences) on sticky notes.
Another vote for the Surface devices! They work really well and the pen has 4 changeable tips that you can get for $10.
I enjoy grabbing my pen of my surface device and clicking the pen button on top to open OneNote or double clicking to take me to the windows Ink space in the new Windows 10 Anniversary update. You could customize the pen button to open any app if you wanted.
