With it being “Name Yourself” day, a few of us are confused by all the changes. What are the chances of having a username history in Profiles? (Or some other more brilliant/practical/simple solution…)

I would second this. I would also understand if there were times when certain names were purged from history, e.g. someone used their full name and decided that they did not want it online.
From the activity today and previously, I would say that most users are changing their usernames for fun and the old username does not present an issue if there is a history recording it.

Actually, today is somewhat rare. The vast majority of username changes we do are for people who want to hide their real name or because we are changing it due to a rule violation (mostly company names).
Behind the scenes we already have a log of changes, but I would guess there it is a very low possibility that we would open that up to others. If people want to advertise the change, making a Water Cooler post might be good, so you can search the new name, find that old post that states what the name used to be, and then update your mental records.
Some people just want to start over though, and intentionally be unknown again for a while.

So, we just need to find the people who’ve changed their username and razz them into admitting it… OR Create a space where all feel safe to let us know their thinking and fun stories behind their username!
