We’re having a problem getting Spiceworks to add our Macs to inventory. What happens is Spiceworks sees the IP address of the Mac I’m testing with, the circular progress indicator shows the number 25 in it, then the scan ends about 10 seconds later. The Mac doesn’t show up in inventory either by name or IP address.

If I look at the finder_discovery8.log file on the Spiceworks server, I can see that it recognized the computer by name and identified all of the hardware, software, etc. I don’t see any errors in the log, but the computer doesn’t make it into our inventory.

Here’s what I’ve done so far on the Mac I’m testing with:

  • Verified that the hostname is the same under sharing, in WINS, and under sharing.
  • Checked to be sure that the Mac has an A record on our DNS server with the proper IP address.
  • Looked at the computer account for the Mac in AD. It’s listed as a Mac, not a Windows computer. It sees the proper OS version (10.10.3)
  • Made sure that Spiceworks is scanning with an admin account on the Mac
  • Enabled remote login

Does anyone have any tips or tricks to share that might help us out?

Thanks,
Matt

remote login = ssh in the MacOSX

Thanks Martin2012. I went through that list yesterday, but still have the same issue.

Hey Matt,

You mentioned looking in the finder_discovery8.log file and the Macs seem to be scanning okay. What are the last lines you see when Spiceworks finishes scanning those devices? I’m wondering there’s a problem when trying to save the devices.

If you’re not sure and would like some help looking at the logs, we can get a support ticket created.

Thanks for the help Jon. Here are the last lines in the log:

D[10:58:49.38 bb2344] Updating scanjob 13063 with attrs {:state=>“complete”, :progress=>100, :finder_pid=>7128}

Okay, so we know the scan is actually completing. That’s good… hanging scans aren’t ever fun.

Let’s go ahead and get some full logs over this way so we can work through the entire scan. I’ll spin up a ticket for you so we can look at those together. Hang tight!

Sounds good. Thanks Jon!

Just thought I’d update this in case anyone stumbles along it with the same issue. After much troubleshooting with Spiceworks tech support, we found that the problem was that Spiceworks was having a problem scanning the Macs that we bound to the domain. It would scan the computer, identify all of the hardware and software, but not add it to inventory. While I still haven’t fully solved the problem, work around is scan each Mac during , before binding it to AD. That at least adds the pertinent information to our inventory, although the info doesn’t get updated in subsequent scans after binding to the domain. I haven’t invested much time in it since finding a workaround, but I’m sure there is a solution.
