Hi Everyone,
Is anyone using replication to the Unitrends cloud feature? If so what has your experience been like and what have your upload speeds been like? I am working thru an issue and can’t seem to replicate more than an average of 5Mbps or so on 100Mbps connection. Unitrends support has been engaged for a while, just looking to see if other have had a similar experiences.
Thank You

Adam - I’m sorry that you’re having some issues with your cloud replication speeds. I’m sure that some people will respond here, but if not, please let me know, and I can get you in touch with some other existing users to discuss.
We have the Unitrends 813. We don’t use the replication feature, but our backup speeds have always been pretty slow. I actually have a backup running right now that has been running for 2 hours moving at 10mb/s transfer rates and has only transfered around 50gb. One of our servers with just 400gb of data usually takes about 40 hours to complete.
Russell - These rates seem slow. Have you tried adjusting your throttling settings?
Adam,
I’m right there with you, I have a Gig Fiber connection and I can’t seem to get speeds higher than 5-10MB. Unitrends support tells me they see average of 50-75MB from customers with larger pipes and have even seen speeds 100-125MB so they claim it’s possible.
I’ve been working with Support since December of 2013 on this issue though so don’t hold your breath! I did have one of the support guys Friday to tell me to check UDP flooding prevention on my firewall which is something I’m looking into but awaiting some more information back from Unitrends on the public IP they use for my replication.
I’ll let you know if this makes any difference.
Greg - I hate to hear that you’ve been working on this for so long. Anything I can do to help, or do you feel like support is doing all they can for you?
Keep me in the loop for sure! I have a feeling that it might be the fact that their database operations can’t produce data fast enough to send across the wire. I myself have a pretty basic setup on a Cisco ASA series and was also curious if somehow I could be filtering/hurting the traffic.
Are you using the virtual appliance or hardware model?
Thanks!
We have an 822 model and we are also running Cisco ASAs (5520) I’ll let you know if I find anything on the Cisco end that can help.
Funny enough we have the exact same setup.
Thanks!
Just passing along an update from my end. Unitrends had some datacenter maintenance over the past few days. Since then my throughput has increased to about 15Mbps. Of course not nearly making use of available bandwidth but a small step in the right direction.

Adam - Thanks for this update! Glad that things are moving in the right direction!
They must of given you some of mine! I’ve decreased to about 2MB! I’m now replicating ~18GB every 24 hours! Information back from Cisco is that the ASA is not having any affect on the Unitrends packets.
Greg - Have you contacted support about this change?
FYI, this came from their support team this afternoon which is why I assume I am seeing a bit better performance:
“… I now understand you’re working with sales on some unrelated issues, but replication is greatly improved after a router change at our datacetner.”
They made some additional changes on my end this morning as well. I’m not getting my hopes up yet but I was seeing bursting as high as 45Mbps… Still seemed to be averaging around 20Mbps though, I’ll have a better idea tomorrow as they didn’t fix it until later in the morning.

Sounds like we’re progressing! Thanks for the updates!
I am hovering around the 20Mbps range myself. I am still stressing the point that if I add another say 200GB worth of data it will take a very long time at those speeds and that isn’t the point of DR/Replication. It does sound like it’s progressing but just a shame it has taken me 6 months to get incremental improvement…
Adam - We agree with you on the time it took to see an improvement, and are working to resolve any future roadblocks like this. We’ll definitely keep you updated as we move forward, but if you ever have a question, please let us know.
This morning I am seeing use of my full 100Mbps connection which appears to be used by the Unitrends appliance. Will continue to monitor. Any changes on your end?
False alarm. It was from the Unitrends appliance but the bandwidth is due to archiving to Amazon S3 not for replication.
