I’m trying to set up Unitrends Enterprise Backup for testing on vmware.
I’ve downloaded and deployed, but keep having issues with configuring networking - I can ping ip addresses from the console network test, but not domain names.
I also can’t ping the device from my machine.
I’ve triple checked the settings (ip, network mask, dns etc), and also re-downloaded/deployed the device.
I’m on ESXi 5.0 update 2.
any thoughts please?

Simon - Thank you for testing out Unitrends Enterprise Backup. Which version of UEB are you using - free, trial, or NFR?

Hi Katie,
I want to use the trial but I’ve not got that far - i can’t log into the device…
If you’re using the trial, which includes support, I would recommend calling our support line at 888.374.6124 to help you with your installation. They should be able to troubleshoot with you.
If you’d prefer not to call support, you may want to check out our video tutorials , specifically, Deploying UEB for VMware .

Have you changed the appliance’s default IP address 10.10.10.1 to an IP within your existing subnet?
Or as Katie suggests, you can call support. They’re a great bunch!

have you got your DNS Search domain set to your internal domain name (eg domainname.local)
does the test to www.unitrends work?

Gabrielle - I’ve changed the IP to be in my range
Kenny - I’ve changed the search domain.
I can ping 8.8.8.8 (google’s DNS) but can’t ping any domain names (www.bbc.co.uk). I also can’t ping the device from my desktop. it looks to me like a DNS issue.
Katie - do you have a UK support number I could call please? I’ve had a quick look t the video and can’t see that I’ve missed anything…
definitely sounds like a dns issue then.
you’ve said your dns is set correctly - can you ping the IP of your dns, just in case it can’t contact that for some reason?
yup - DNS servers both ping fine. As I said, I also can’t ping the device from my workstation so can’t get in at all…
i’m at a loss…
Sorry Simon - I didn’t look to see where you are from. Here’s our international support number: 1.855.593.2861

one way pinging usually relates to a routing issue - is the Unitrends box on a different subnet / vlan? Checked the default gateways?

Hi Everyone,
i’ve had another chance to look at this today and seem to have the system working - I’ve managed to backup a box!
Katie - I haven’t yet had a chance to speak to support and will do early next week if I don’t get any results on here.
The problem seems to be not with DNS but with Default Gateway. Through trial and error (deploy, configure, delete, repeat) I’ve worked out that DNS works fine (internally only) and I can access the device with ping/www, but only if I leave the default gateway blank.
If I put in my firewall (ASA5510) address in the default gateway field, I can ping internal and external IP addresses, can’t ping DNS and access to the web interface/ping dies. any thoughts?

is the ASA5510 the same default gateway that all other machine use?
If you replace the unitrends box with a standard PC for testing, do you still have the same issues pinging from the test PC?

I’ve got a call waiting (delayed by me) with Unitrends support - hoping we’ll be able to look at this today.
settings are:
ip - 10.0.1.26
mask - 255.0.0.0
gateway - n/a
dns - 10.0.1.1 / 10.0.1.2
this matches my pc

Hi Simon,
you’ve set the ip address to be the same on the unitrends box as on your pc?
in which case that will be the issue
you need to find an ip that’s free in the same range
e.g. 10.0.1.27
Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,
sorry, i meant dns and netmask were the same as my pc…
my machine is in the 10.0.3 range we use for desktops…
I know the 255.0.0.0 mask isn’t great - I inherited it and haven’t changed this as yet.

what gateway to you use on your pc?
do you use VLANs?

You’re almost certainly having issues because you’ve not got a default gateway set on your Unitrends box.
Assuming it’s on the sam evland / subnet as your PC, do an IPCONFIG /ALL from your pc, and get the default gateway from there, and put it in to your Unitrends IP settings.
