A couple months ago I posted here to share my frustration with the Unitrends systems I have in place. ( http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/563582-growing-frustration-with-unitrends?page=1&source=homepage-feed )

I wanted to follow up on that post and mention that I am extremely pleased with Unitrends response to my concerns. They assigned a Senior Level 2 engineer to my case and he investigated and resolved the issues I had with replication reliability and backup retention.

It took a bit longer than I would have liked to get these systems operating properly, and I was beginning to question my decision to go with Unitrends. However, Unitrends stepped up big and went to great lengths to make sure I was comfortable with how the systems were operating.

The issues discovered were related to autosynth, forceSynthesis, and tasker. I’m told these fixes will be included in the 8.0 release of their software.

My next step is to perform some test restores to make sure I can get my systems back online after a real disaster.

That’s awesome. Thanks for providing the follow up!

It’s always nice to hear something positive like this. Generally people only post when something is wrong.

I am very happy to hear that. Unitrends has been awesome from what we have seen for all of our customers.

Its really nice to know you got some help from Unitrends. I my self had to get in touch with my sales rep to be able to get someone to help. I had placed a work order and did not hear from anybody at Unitrends until I called my sales rep and she was able to get me some help. We are thinking about switching to Veeam for our back up and replication needs.

I’m not shocked. I’m still having intermittent issues with new masters not being created by the autosynth process (it tries but fails) and then a new master backup has to be run against the server all over again.

I have put in a ticket about it and the tech said it was most likely a “database problem”.

Good to know they’re fixing it in 8.

Danny - I’m sorry to hear that you had some issues getting support to respond to you. Can you forward over your case numbers or asset tag number so that I can look into this further for you?

Great to hear this! Kudos to Unitrends for taking ownership of the problem.

Did they say when 8.0 is slated to come out?

8.0 is scheduled to be released in the next 30 days or so. We do not have an exact date yet since we’re still finalizing all of the results of our Beta test (thanks to those of you on our Beta test team), and our Quality Assurance team is still working on their tests. As soon as I know more, I’ll update the community.

Guess it’s better Symantec Support, they are horrible. My co-worker had to open over 5 tickets to resolve our BackupExec issues, since upgraded to latest & greatest(POS!). Does anyone know how does it compares to VEAM?

Thanks

Yi Cheung - Are you asking how Unitrends compares to Veeam, or how Symantec compares to Veeam?

come to think of it, the issues are not resolved, yet! Haha… terrible. If Symantec is listening to Social Media channels… better improve on your support, ;).

Unitrends vs VEAM thanks

Glad Unitrends is listening & monitoring Social media channels.

So does Unitrend and VEEAM only does Vmware VM backups? How about SAN(Netapp) and 3rd party Backup storages appliances like Exagrid or NEC HYDRAstor?

thanks

There are quite a few differences:

  • Unitrends offers both physical appliances and virtual appliances.
  • Unitrends can protect over 120 different operating systems and applications from a single solution, including both virtual and physical OSs.
  • You have the choice to protect your virtual clients with or without an agent.
  • Our physical appliances are licensed by capacity, meaning that there are never any per anything charges - no per client, OS, feature, etc. Our virtual appliances can be licensed by protected TB or by protected resource, and all features are always included.
  • Our support is based in Columbia, SC.
  • Support contracts include hardware replacement as well as technical support for our physical appliance customers. All customers with an active support contract receive all software updates automatically, and free.

There may be a few more differences between us, but those are the biggest ones. If there’s a specific feature that you’re wondering about, please let me know.

You can absolutely protect SANs, NASs, laptops, desktops, and servers with Unitrends. Also, you may want to start a new thread with all of your questions about Unitrends instead of posting to this thread to ensure that your questions get the most visibility.

OK , thanks worth looking into going forward to 2015. Unfortunately, we just renewal our Symantec licenses for 1 year, :(.
