I am trying to demo Unitrends Free to see if I want to use it and eventually purchase it in the future. I’ve installed it on my HyperVisor and when I try to add a VM, I get the error:
Summary: Error communicating with system.
Cause: Call was unsuccessful.
Detail: [System] Remote agent installation is not supported with Windows 8.1 or 2012R2. Please download and install the agent from the Unitrends website onto the Windows system.
I did a search on their website and it looks like I may need an agent but there isn’t one for download for 2012 R2.
Is this a limitation of the “Free” version?
Thanks!

I don’t think it’s a limitation of the free version. I take it to mean that you can’t “push” the agent to the server you want to protect. You’ll have to install it manually. Just download the latest 64-bit agent release from the Unitrends web site. It should work - we have at least two Windows 2012 R2 servers added to our Unitrends backup appliance.
OK thanks…I looked a little harder and saw it said AND UP on the operating systems…my bad!

Yeah, they are 2003 and UP.
Brian - Thanks for testing out Unitrends! The free version is limited to protecting 8 VMs in an agentless architecture. If you’re looking to protect a more diverse environment, including physical clients, or using agents, then our trial version, may be a better option. This version will protect unlimited clients, including both virtual and physical clients, for 30 days. This version includes support, so you can have our support team assist with installation and any other questions as you move forward.
Please let me know what questions I can answer for you as you move forward.
After my second up of coffee, I saw AND UP.
This is my first attempt at Hyper-V and I have my migration planned for next Friday (SBS 2003 to 2012 R2). Still a little nervous about virtualizing as I am not up on troubleshooting if problems arise.
Since my Domain Controller will be on a VM, can I assume Unitrends has excellent AD backup?

There isn’t any thing specific to Active Directory backups like you see with Exchange, SQL, or SharePoint, but the Bare Metal backups and System State component of the File-Level backups should keep you covered. Since your DC will be a virtual machine, you can also back it up at the hypervisor level, which I definitely recommend.
We back up all of our Hyper-V virtual machines on a nightly (incremental forever) schedule, then we cover the file-level changes with agent-based backups during the day.
Thanks for the clarification. Sadly, I have no budget for a new backup suite so I may have to either just go physical or keep fingers crossed that my current solution will work fine in a Virtual environment,

We are - this offer is still available. It includes support for 2 virtual sockets & 2 application servers, which can be virtual or physical. The NFR edition includes 1 year of support, which is renewable annually as long as you remain a member of the Spiceworks community.
So if it is agentless, then why am I getting this error when trying to add a client:
Summary: Error communicating with system.
Cause: Call was unsuccessful.
Detail: [System] Remote agent installation is not supported with Windows 8.1 or 2012R2. Please download and install the agent from the Unitrends website onto the Windows system.
Brian - How many clients have you tried to add to this UEB installation? Also, what kind of schedule have you created for this client?
Zero. This is a fresh install. Just trying to add my first client.
Your Windows 8.1 client - is it a VM?
The client I am trying to add is as Server 2012 R2 VM.
Great! Just wanted to confirm. Have you followed the steps outlined in this video ?
Hmmm…this makes me think I’ve not really set this up correctly. Do I need to do anything before trying to add clients?
Did you follow the steps outlined in this video tutorial (assuming that you’re UEB is on Hyper-V. If not, there are other video tutorials available on our main video tutorial page)?
Let me check those out because I basically ran the installer, it created a VM, I configured and logged into the web GUI and proceeded to add clients…looks like I need to back up some…will report my findings…
Great - if you need to start over, email licensing@unitrends.com to get a new license key.
