Been thinking of getting Unitrends Enterprise Backup to protect 1-2 of my hosts one is XenServer 7 the Other ESXi (Paid).

Simple question - When will Unitrends support XenServer 7

Neil - Thanks for considering Unitrends for your backup needs. Since Xenserver 7.0 was just made available last week, we are still testing our update through our quality assurance team, and do not have a solid estimate on when this will be made available to our customers. If you’d like, we can have the team follow up with you when it’s ready.

yes that would be great, happy to Beta test if needed too :slight_smile:

Great! Can you send me your contact info via private message so that I can set this up for you?

XenServer 7 was in fact released in May 2016 , not July as you suggested.

I was thinking about upgrading to XenServer 7 this coming weekend but then I realised our backup software may not support it. I am still using PHD Virtual Backup 6.5 as it’s the only software supported by Unitrends that seems to be reliable and “just works”. I tried UVB 8.0 with XenServer 6.5 in the past and it worked, but found that PHD worked better.

Since XenServer 7 has been available for nearly 3 months, where is the XenServer 7 support from Unitrends? I downloaded a trial of UEB 9 this morning and when I tried to add our XenServer 7 test host, it said this version of Xen was not supported. I’m running 9.0.0-14.201606021112.CentOS6.

Thank you.

Just spoke to my new account manager and was advised that support for XenServer 7 is coming on 09/09/2016.

Since I cannot use UEB 9 now, I have been conducting some tests with PHD 6.5 and XenServer 7, and I have managed to do a full backup of a Windows Server 2012 R2 VM using the PHD Guest Tools and restore the same VM to the XenServer 7 host.

Not sure why UEB couldn’t do that. PHD is a few years older too, and it still works better than UEB!

I’m waiting on this as well - we upgraded to XS 7, and now we have a broken backup solution :frowning:

I’m doing backups manually right now, waiting on a solution to this.

My account manager tells me there’s an update coming in September to introduce support for XS7. For now I’ll be using PHD Virtual Backup 6.5 which seems to work absolutely spot on with XS7.

Did you have an old copy of that laying around or something? It was my understanding that since Unitrends acquired PHDVirtual, you couldn’t get their products anymore…

Always had PHD VB, just never upgraded because UVB didn’t do things offered by PHD, such as truncating Exchange transaction logs after a successful backup. PHD is still available for download in the support centre, though it’s not officially supporting XS7, but it definitely works for us.

After digging into this there is a work around and it’s pretty easy to do.

I’ve tested this with UVB 8.0.6 and Xenserver 7.0 with the latest patches.

UVB cannot parse a file which it uses to determine which version of xenserver it’s talking to and the way it figures that out is using the index.html page you see when you navigate to http://

What I did to get UVB 100% working again was edit the file on the pool master at /opt/xensource/www/Citrix-index.html and change it to reflect the index page for a xenserver 6.5 server like so.

<html>
  <title>XenServer 6.5.0</title>
<head>
</head>
<body>
  <p/>Citrix Systems, Inc. XenServer 6.5.0
  <p/><a href="XenCenter.iso">XenCenter CD image</a>
  <p/><a href="XenCenterSetup.exe">XenCenter installer</a>
</body>
</html>

If your OCD is getting the best of you and you’d like it to say Xenserver 7.0 in UVB just change the version number inside the tag to whatever you want and it still works fine.

Kudos to you! I just tested this, and it does indeed work!

Ha, this is too awesome.

I feel like I should be giving out boyscout XenServer badges to you guys for being so crafty.

T-Shirts work too :wink:

Just to add a little more info - this works with UVB, but not with UEB.

Xen Orchestra also supports XenServer 7, and is able to be built for free.

It’s a one line command.

If you’re interested let me know.

So, I loaded the hotfix today.

I successfully added my XenServer7 pool to my protected assets, and I am able to run backups successfully. However, the only mode I have available for backups is “Fulls” for scheduled, or “Full” for now - no incremental or differential. Is this upcoming functionality?
