The team I work with keeps track of inventory via an Excel spreadsheet. There has been talk over the past couple years of someone in house developing some inventory software. I asked about using Spiceworks, and the team of guys all indicate that it just doesn’t work…but nobody could provide any specific details as to why…at least that made sense to me.

The goal is to have a system that can track the inventory of computers, monitors, scanners, printers, etc…associate each device with a user and desk location.

I am looking for positive and negative opinions regarding whether or not Spiceworks could be a solution for this. Ideally, we would like to add all of the equipment via csv/bulk, since it is already inventoried in a spreadsheet.

Any input will be appreciated.

Spiceworks is scanning software. So ideal for tracking “what it sees.” Uploading data from CSV would make no sense and fundamentally breaks what Spiceworks is for. If you want to do that, you should be looking at asset software. Snipe-IT woudl be an example.

What you might want to do is run Spiceworks to SCAN your environment and use that data to feed your asset system.

Glad to help :slight_smile: Definitely install and use SW, great tool. If you were starting from scratch it might even be the better tool for you. It’s using existing data that really swings the balance for the asset portion. Although for non-volatile assets (meaning keyboards, monitors, printers and other things not scannable) something like Snipe-IT is way easier.
