I am fixing up an old computer I bought on ebay(this is from one of my threads that mentioned I had an itch and I am fulfilling it!) a Mac Pro with a 2.66 GHz with two Dual Core CPUs , I also bought Dual Quad Core Xeon CPUs to upgrade 8GB of ram bumping it to 12GB of ram and 3 1.5TB hard drives that will have RAID I bought this for a weekend project. As a joke I asked my boss if I could use it in the office I would even put windows on it! and shockingly he said yes and I could keep OSX on it if I wanted and he was serious about it! So I most likely will just to test it out at work so my Question is do or would you use your own computer at work desktop or laptop?

how much did the whole custom setup run you?

I don’t use my own computer at work. Likewise, I don’t provide my own desk, chair, pens, or paper at work. Your employer should provide the basics needed for you to perform your job.

If you do this, you should ensure that it’s recorded ahead of time that the computer is yours and not the company’s. Also, if/when you leave the company, there will be the question of removing company information from your personal computer.

I’m sure I could use my MacBook at work, as I also have virtual machines with XP, Win 7, & Win 8 so there should be no compatibility issue.

Our company uses: Remote Desktop, Office, TeamViewer, Citrix, SAP, Quickbooks, TimeQPlus, and unfortunately Lansweeper for our network monitoring :frowning: Sorry Spiceworks! I tried pushing for you… but I still have it installed locally and use it to monitor instead. LOL

But the workplace gave me a laptop to use, which is pretty good… the only downside is, it is strictly Windows 8. But it is free.

about $581.00 I have been saving up for something like this yeah I could have built a PC with the Dual CPUs but for some reason when I looked at the motherboards they didnt jump out at me and the Processors were ridiculously priced. I forgot to mention I bought an upgraded graphics card for it that was about $130.00 and the computer itself for $250.00 I could have done fine with just one hard drive but 1.5TB drives for 54.00 a pop was good!

I have at times threatened to do the same… I love my Mac Pro (granted it has it’s limitations) but at least it doesn’t look like a trash can =D

No I wouldn’t. I don’t want to cross work over with my stuff. I wouldn’t want to ‘confuse’ the issue of property. For instance, my machine - I don’t want my coworkers to be able to log into my machine. What’s on there is my business and not the business of the company.

I have my own computer… its okay it does the job I like it but I just wanted to see how a Mac would do in my environment. we use apps like citrix and remote desktop I will probably use it for a few weeks and then go back to my normal work computer.

I occasionally use my personal laptop for work, but very, very little. The company provides what I need to do my job. My laptop is used on one-off occasions.

I completely agree! but in this case there wouldn’t be any personal info on it.

I have a really strict policy that no personal stuff connects to our network at work. Lets me tell anyone who brings in their spyware infested rootkit’d hot mess to bugger off.

Unfortunately, it would bother me to be a hypocrite heheh.

I use my old stuff at work. It wouldn’t have been doing much anyways and it gives my office computer a bit of a kick in the ass in case I want to do something intensive on it or test some VMs or something without having to put the server in any danger.

Doesn’t matter to me

It’s MINE, not the company’s.

I do not use my own computer at work. If I started using my own, my users would also want to start using their own. Then the trouble begins.

True when I was a student in high school working in the PC repair class we had teachers bring there own computers if lets say they bought a new one at home and if the teacher didnt like the Macs myself and my teacher would gladly put our own windows image on it and join it to the domain and they were happy and in return we were happy because that means we had a spare computer incase something happened… every environment is different I guess.

I had a keyboard sent to work once, a nice $80 mechanical with back lit keys. I of course had to un-box it and test it if for no other reason than to annoy everyone around me with the loud ka-chunk of those mechanical switches. Needless to say when I took it home at the end of the day no one suspected I was stealing company property. For one it looked too expensive to be a company keyboard and I think everyone was glad to see it go with me… piece and quiet at last.

Last Q (the most important one imho)

which OSX version you running? prays for mavericks

No, my personal stuff doesn’t go to work with me or connect to my network.

I don’t use my personal computer at work. I wont even put it on our work network. I don’t do any business on my personal computer at all. If I have to do anything it is with my work laptop. I am not afraid of what I have on my personal computer, but afraid of what might happen if we are litigated. Not that it is a huge threat. I just really like my personal computer and could not possibly get through a week without playing some ESO or BF4 if for some reason it got taken legally.

We do a lot of BYOD so I am really familiar with the laws and compliance regarding BYOD. Any device that has attached to the company network for any reason is up for grabs in the discovery process of any litigation. I know that I would probably be the one providing a list of computers and so forth, but it is not a risk I am willing to take with my own PC.
