Hi there,
We have this setup:
1x 2 Socket Hyper V Server with 2x Server 2012R2 (will be upgraded to 2016),
1x 2 Socket Server 2008R2
1x 2 Socket until today unused Server with eventually Windows 7 or Server instances
We have 40 users .
How many licences do i need? I think i need 3 Veeam Backup Essentials v9 licences. Am i right?

3 will do it. You can find more info here:

You need one license for 6 CPU sockets. Take a look at special offering of Veeam Backup Essentials: Veeam Data Platform Essentials | SMB Backup

One license?
This tells me i need to buy 3 licenses?!
or is it then 6x 400€?

This is what we’ve got. I also highly recommend that you get the Enterprise version of Essentials as it includes the SureBackup tool as well as the On-Demand Sandbox. Makes testing and ensuring your backups work SO EASY. Great for smaller shops with limited IT staff and time.

This is correct. You’re only using one license, but Essentials covers up to 6 sockets. So yes, 6x 400€ to cover all of your hosts

I think i need to buy the “support option” right?
I can count the programs where i used the maintanance contracts sold to me on one hand.
Expensive support for nothing.
So it will be 4350€ for Enterprise Essentials for my 6 sockets for a year only.
God, how am i supposed to tell my boss he needs to pay as much as we pay for the server hardware just for a backup tool. Dang.

The 4350 € is the first year, after that they generally use the normal 20% maintenance fee per year. It not only includes support, but upgrades as well. You don’t have to purchase it, but you won’t get and upgrades either then.
Do you really need Enterprise?

Right. That’s just your initial cost. Your maintenance will only be roughly 20% per year as Derek has said. Also, you don’t NEED Enterprise, but if it’s in the budget, it’s worth having. I trust Veeam without it, but it’s nice to have that extra layer of testing/peace of mind. Veeam will still tell you if there’s any issues with your backups without having the test restore platforms.

Right, enterprise would be nice. But i thing i need to go with a mixture of Free / Paid
I think i’ll use the free version for the non critical server and the paid for the critical
Arno, if you have 3 servers (6 CPU sockets) and aiming to pay reasonably for the license, I wouldn’t recommend to spend all money for 1x2 CPU sockets Enterprise Plus license (why would you have a mix of Paid/Free?). Think rationally and get 1x6 CPU sockets Standard license. Unless Ent/Ent+ edition has a real benefit for your environment, you’ll be happy with Standard already.

Just ask them how much the data is worth! If the data isn’t worth paying for backup software great but chances are the cost to recreate the data will be significantly less than the backup software. Swallowing 4350€ sounds like a lot but in the grand scheme of things it is probably equivalent to 2 months of the cost to the business of one low level employee.
That said spending more for features you won’t necessarily use isn’t sensible so like Andrew is proposing pick what is right for you.
We use Veeam and I am almost due to renew maintenance as we are coming to the end of our initial 3 years and I have no hesitation in going for Veeam again, so much so I am not even looking at any other options. In those 3 years we have gone from Version 7 all the way through to 9 right now and we will get 9.5 in that period as well. It really is a great product.

That 3rd server seems odd. Do you really need to back it up? If you are going to put Windows 7 on it (would need to check the MS licensing for that) what is it going to be hosting?
How many VMs do you have? And what is the distribution on each host? From the looks of your post it seems like:
Server 1: 2 VMs
Server 2: Physical
Server 3: Unused
Just a further to my last post I’ve been looking through some of your posts and I think some context is missing from this thread.
From what I can gather you have 3TB of data, have 2 VMs on Server 1 and run office365. Do you need to backup Server 2/3 at all?
I think you could potentially get away with mixed paid/free and be better off. There is another option which is what are those other servers doing? If you could visualise Server 2 and put it on Server 1 then you’ve cut your Veeam licensing down significantly.
MS Standard: 901 vs 2X400 + 160 + 160 = 1120 for Veeam.

Sorry for the late reply.
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes. Server 3 is really “odd”
It is a server i don’t know what to do with. Maybe some testlab VM’s or a backup AD/DNS
Server 2 is our ERP system so it really needs to be backed up.
I really think i am going the Server 1 and 2 with the Standard licence and Server 3 with the free licence.
