Weird Wonder Wednesday (UDTQ#95) - No Backlight

Happy Wednesday, folks!

The Recap:

Yesterday’s question asked about TN displays, and specifically which option was NOT true. Y’all had a very close race going the last time I checked last night, but we pulled through and the correct (or should I say incorrect, since it’s a NOT question? :joy:) answer was “They have superior color accuracy and viewing angles” which nearly 40% of you chose!

For folks unfamiliar with TN, you might want to save the research for after you answer today’s question, but they’re still relevant today because they’re cheap to produce, and work reasonably well, so long as you have a backlight, or a reflective panel behind them in a lit area (though, this is typically only monochromatic displays, like you would see on a calculator for example,) and are expected to view the panel from a known angle. After you’ve taken today’s question, check out this Tom’s Hardware article on them if you’re interested in learning more.

The Ramble:

How often do you deal with construction near your home?

This is late this morning partially because I had to switch machines due to my internet going out (I keep forgetting my current desktop doesn’t have a WiFi card for backup :joy:)… Since I moved into this house in 2021 (has it been over 3 years already? Wow…) The only time I haven’t had to deal with construction going on on my block has been during the winter when it’s too cold for them to do anything useful.

This week, I was informed by letter that my internet would be going out intermittently this week. They couldn’t tell me when, which days, for how long, or even vague approximations other than “this week” so I’m not particularly pleased with my provider at the moment, but I live in an area where I don’t have another “real” option, unfortunately.

Soooo, I guess I’ll just need to expect the worst and hope it’s not that bad. :joy:

(Edit from the future: of course it came back up as I was ready to post this.)

The Real Question:

If you’re paying attention, you should be able to rule one of these answers out pretty quickly based on yesterday’s question

In which of the following display types do the pixel elements emit light without the need for a backlight?
  • OLED (Organic LED)
  • TN (Twisted Nematic)
  • IPS (In-Plane Switching)
  • KDC (Kids Drawing with Crayons)
  • I’m not sure, but I’m excited to learn more!

The Rest:

If you’d like to be notified when there’s a new question, check out this How To guide on following tags! I also typically post in the General chatroom when they go live, so come hang out there too!

As always, if you have suggestions for future questions, improvements, or want to help out with a full question, shoot me a DM or leave a comment below!

And since you’re still reading this, don’t forget to leave me a spice-up just below this! If it’s not orange and filled-in like this → :sw_pepper: it’s not spiced up yet! It lets me know you enjoy these and gives us both points, so why not?

Never. But my cell service is my backup. I’ll use a hotspot when I hit the pool.

OLED = Display grown without fertilizer
TN = Tennessee
IPS = Changing seats while flying
KDC = What keeps the youngin’s busy until the food arrives at Chili’s

Thankfully, I live in the country, and the pastureland around me hopefully isn’t getting sold to developers anytime soon. TONS of development is happening in town though, and I hate seeing it. This “small town” isn’t going to be small much longer.

Yeah, I guess I cut that part, but I switched to my phone’s hotspot on a laptop to continue working. Unfortunately, the cell service here isn’t the best either, though.

When our neighbor was building across our private road, I had to deal with unannounced power cuts several times, always on the days I was working from home. :face_with_steam_from_nose:

Actually, losing power is the main cause of internet service outages for me. About 30 minutes AFTER the storm passed last night, when the wind and weather were calm, we lost power for two hours. My wife was just getting ready to place an order with some Amazon Prime Day purchases.

I live waaaaay out in the country so almost never. Last time was 12 years ago. A company came by laying fiber. Put the breakout box in and everything. I was so excited. Nothing. Not enough people in my area to make it worth it. They ran it to a nearby town.

This spring another company came by running more fiber. Put a new breakout box in and even ran it to my house. A rep from the telcom stopped by and said we should be off DSL and onto fiber before the summer is over. Yaaah!

Might be worth getting one of these (see video). The antennas most likely have better pickup than a cellphone.

I love DavePL! I just finished his book recently. I skipped this video because I’d assumed it was along the same lines as the Mushroom Networks stuff that was going around the tech youtube space a few years back, but I’ll have to check it out later.

Thanks for the suggestion!

For anyone not familiar with DavePL, by the way, he’s the guy who wrote task manager. He’s now retired and posts youtube videos about his different hobbies including (but not limited to) electronics, car/truck restorations, programming, and restoring historically significant computers. He recently bought a full sized PDP-11 and did a video on making it completely wireless (including power!)

I don’t know if they emit light, but
they sure emit sound…

This was a good question because it was a straightforward one. You just had to know that LED is an initialism for Light Emitting Diode to figure out the correct answer.

And apparently, neither do certain old Philips LCD TV’s.

10 years ago, we gave an old LCD TV to family members. At the time, we were sort of surprised that it was still working, because it was 10+ years old even then. We warned them that it could not possibly have much life left and they were ok with that.

Fast forward to today. That TV is still going and it is basically on most of the day, every day.

20+ years ago, some engineer said, “I’m going to make the longest lasting fluorescent tube ever”. My hat is off to that engineer.
