Twisted Trivia Tuesday (UDTQ#94) - Twisted Nematic
Happy Tuesday, folks!
The Recap:
Yesterday’s question asked about the difference between 1080p and 1080i and around 75% of you correctly chose that 1080p draws line by line (this is called Progressive) and 1080i draws every other line, only drawing half the screen per frame (this is called Interlaced.) Good job! If you’re not familiar with the terms, Sony explains it slightly more in depth here but unfortunately, their link to the “tutorial” mentioned in the article seems to be dead.

The Ramble:
What projects are on your workbench (physically, or metaphorically) right now?
I’ve got a lot of different hobbies and interests, so just off the top of my head, I’ve got at least a dozen right now… Probably half a dozen that are also physically on the new workbench I built a couple weeks (months? I don’t believe in time) back, including converting a USB Micro-B mouse to USB-C, a bunch of Gameboy mods and flashcart builds, and a shoebox full of old 4GB and smaller DDR3/4 sticks that I want to build into trees other fun stuff.
Click to see the rest of my 'off the top of my head' project to-do list
- I need to re-build my racing sim… I had to take everything apart to get it out of my old office, and it’s still in pieces.
- I need to build a shelfing system for my new office to organize all of the junk I currently just have piled in cheap bins right now.
- I really should finish running ethernet to the other rooms upstairs… I bought all the tools and exterior UV-resistant cabling I needed, but only ever got around to finishing one exterior run (though I did manage to get 2 of the other rooms setup with interior runs, neither looks great
- I need to finish painting the basement
- We want to re-build the bathroom vanity, because the previous owner didn’t do a great job with what’s there now, and we’ve had to replace the drain pipes on the sinks 3 times now due to the way they’re setup.
- I need to break out the microscope to find some alternate solder points on a pcb that has some lifted pads. (It’s a very cool board that has 2 ROM chips, and you can hot-swap between them without rebooting to do some really neat stuff with early Pokémon games.
- I need to put up some shelves in our bedroom for the SO’s plushy collection
- I need to stop writing this and get this thing published already!

The Real Question:
It’s apparently display week, as we’re asking another display related question today. Please note the word NOT in the question today
Which of the following is NOT true about Twisted Nematic displays?
- They’re a type of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
- They have superior color accuracy and viewing angles compared to IPS
- They do not require current flow, and can use much lower voltages than previous tech
- They do not produce light on their own
- I’m not sure, but I’m excited to learn more!
The Rest:
If you’d like to be notified when there’s a new question, check out this How To guide on following tags! I also typically post in the General chatroom when they go live, so come hang out there too!
As always, if you have suggestions for future questions, improvements, or want to help out with a full question, shoot me a DM or leave a comment below!
And since you’re still reading this, don’t forget to leave me a spice-up just below this! If it’s not orange and filled-in like this →
it’s not spiced up yet! It lets me know you enjoy these and gives us both points, so why not?

Welp, have no clue on this one…and also not sure which is the obviously wrong answer…guess it’s time for me to go home…

So how on Earth do you keep track of all these things? I got one thing on my to do list…wake up.

Side effect of my particular cocktail of neurodivergence, I don’t! Whatever happens to be in my head whenever I feel motivated is what gets worked on… Which is why I really need to setup a ticketing system for my personal life at some point. Maybe then I could actually prioritize things appropriately (and manage to keep my homelab up to date in any sort of realistic schedule
)

Maybe you need to make that “NOT true” a few sizes larger.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure if I can in the question.
I definitely can’t now without losing the existing results, so I’m going to try here:
testing: Which of these is NOT Bacon?
Huh… Well it seems like that might actually work.

Well, since I am clueless on this one and won’t cheat by looking up the answer, I will switch to what projects are on my personal workbench.
Hooking up a new ICOM radio and an antenna.
Building a couple of Meshtastic systems.
3D printing/building a drone.
Troubleshooting the starter on my VW Beetle, along with a number of other tasks.
Removing, straightening, replacing the shaft on a lawn mower.
researching what I need to get goats next year. (On the “workbench” because it will involve building shelter.)
And a few dozen other things…

I am going to put laminate floor in my sunroom.
Have to replace a board around my garage door.
Got some raspberry PI/arduino type gear I need to work on trying to figure out.
Got a WIFI enabled stop light controller to put in an old cheap stop light I got.
Going to try and make a shelf for over my house workbench to put my meters, etc on.
Need to also shore up some sagging beams in a crawl space.
Also wish I had more time/motivation to try and learn guitar.
Not really a project but going to try and learn to swim this summer. I always claimed i was too skinny to float, but found I was wrong. Talking to coworker last year somehow this came up and they offered to teach me to swim. Being in Michigan being able to swim could be a lifesaver too.

Yeah, because I did NOT note its presence, and totally pooched the answer.

Good on ya! Never too late, for sure.

If nothing else I never knew what TN stood for before today!
Bench to-do
- calendar/weather dashboard for the wall in our dining room, have all the pieces just have to build, mount and install the Dakboard I created
- 2nd camera for the CatCam - just need to dedicate some time to running the USB cable and then edit the motion file to either switch or display side by side
- commuter bike has a disc brake upgrade that’s been sitting for 12+ months, I’ll either get to it soon or have to do an emergency repair when the front rim fails
- stretch goal: finding a spot for the 3d printer to live (have to move it to the laundry room to print because of cats)

Way too much to list for both work and personal life. Soooo many projects.

You can do it!
I don’t float either, but you can still be a swimmer anyway. Been doing it for 30+ years!
If I take in the absolute maximum amount of air into my lungs it can keep my nose above the water. Just learn to tread water and you can easily find out the rest.

Thanks, it was actually cool just lay there on back and kind of paddle around. The only part I dislike is you’re looking straight up and can’t really tell where your at. Someone should make some swim googles with some way you can see to the sides. So far floated on back, a couple of quick attempts at diving under and swim. I always hated getting head underwater when younger but think growing more used to. Primary goal just be able to do it should I need to, but if I can get good enough to go for a ways without equipment it could be fun. Probably decent excursive too.

I have a couple of suggestions for keeping track of your to-do/projects list …
- Google Keep
- a cool little thing called Spiceworks Cloud Help Desk!
I’m using both … and still failing miserably to get things done!
Things such as -
- Repair/replace window hardware on a few windows around our house. (Over 7 years and counting on getting this done - done one or two so far …)
- Finish cutting down a tree that I mostly did (about 5 years ago)
- Add some guttering to the shed where it’s lacking .. especially over the pedestrian door.
- Upgrade the lagging on the hot water pipes.
- Upgrade the Wi-Fi to fully cover the house at good signal strength. - DONE*!*
- Upgrade firewall mini-PC, install XCP-ng on it, then install 2 VMs, one running the current firewall system (Arista/Untangle NGFW) and the other running LibreNMS. (A recent addition to the list that I’m toying with.)
There are more things on my list, but I’m not recalling them at the moment.
