I think we’d all agree that Spiceworks is a GREAT site, but that logo exudes anything but greatness. It needs help! What does that odd/shape represent? I’d rather see something more theme based that plays off the spice levels or ties into what the site facilitates (discussions about tech, etc). Some ideas:
-
An image of a cartoon like chili pepper
-
A design that depicts three heads talking in a circle (discussing)
-
A pepper of some sort overlayed over 3 gears (get it?)
-
A whimsical image incorporating a spicy pepper
-
a lego figure (since that seems to be popular here)
-
a little guy holding a pepper to the sky as if he has power!
Maybe put it out to the people of Spiceworks to vote! That could be fun.

Its about 5 years late on the minimalist hype train and it looks like a duck.

What’s the S stand for? It’s not an S. On my internet it stands for hope.

Get used to it is all I can say, this is some new level of hipster dot-com-bubble-is-real logo design we’re looking at. I can see the S in the black bar at the top, if I try hard enough, the rest of the time I just see dragon wings.
To OP: Pretty sure Lego anything can’t be used without ridiculous licensing fees, and while it would make me smile, not sure that’s really the right theme for a tech forum, would just end up confusing more people.
In my experience the way these “new logo” things happen is some new marketing/design person gets hired, and needs to justify their existence with “newness” Which is fine, hey everyone needs a job, but when we start going off into lala land, justifying the design with too many dramatic words, you’ve lost me. (for example I watched a video years ago about how the Xbox 360 console enclosure “was to mimic an inhale” as opposed to the classic xbox “being a bulky box and trying to contain all that power” uuuh please, get real)
More such words were written about the new Spiceworks logo here:

Honestly I don’t get it and I don’t like it. I miss the pepper, it was iconic.

The pepper was iconic, this one feels overly tacky to me. People will see a broken pinwheel. We need a “bring back the pepper” movement!

It’s a graphic designer thing. In a magazine redesign, they stay up all night arguing about fonts and line breaks and headers and all those little things that didn’t matter then and matter less today, when everything is online.
My guess is that when they tried to sell ad space they got a lot of strange looks. “What’s spice have to do with IT?” It’s cute and all, but it doesn’t sell. This one is at least ambiguous enough that it doesn’t need explanation.

Not a fan either… I see either a duck or for some reason, a road in the distance, takes me 2 looks to see the S.
It seems this was the step from a ‘playful’ company, to a ‘professional’ company as it seems it killed the fun parts Spiceworks was known for, at least for the people who knew it, so it is to attract more potential people, is my guess.
It’s not duck. It’s a Loon.
Noticed it straight away; not a fan of the logo… looks like something fractured/breaking up. Also do not like the font.
How about incorporating a radial PEPPER arrangement as the logo (and a spiffier font than this example for the top left corner):

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck … it’s SpiceRex.

A few observations,
-
The Spiceworks logo never had a pepper, so there’s nothing to bring back.
-
SpiceRex isn’t going anywhere, he’s still the community mascot (see Jay’s post)
-
Spiceworks as a company has invested over 18 months in this, it’s not going to change.
-
There’s already enough threads about the logo, so can you please use one of those as referenced by Legoman ( https://community.spiceworks.com/blog/2645-an-exciting-day-here-at-spiceworks and here https://community.spiceworks.com/blogs/spiceworks/2644-a-look-behind-our-brand-new-look ) to continue the discussions. Both of those include details of what the new logo means.
I’m going to lock this thread to avoid splitting the discussions any further.
