This is a topic I’m curious about because my job title is rather vague: “Systems Technician”.
I would say I’m a specialist in desktop support, I’ve got my feet wet with AD and other server technologies (mostly as they impact desktops), I speak Internet fluently, and I install high end audio visual equipment…
I guess I kinda need a vague title with that rap sheet.
So, what is your job title and what do you actually wind up doing? Have you found your title impacting your pay or desirability?

With no official title they call me “The Man.” I speak internet too.
I have no offical title so i guess im the drifter.

My title is “Sr. Network Administrator”… the problem is, I’m, uhh, the ONLY network administrator, so it’s like coming in first in a race, and you’re the only one in the race…
I work for a non-profit, and after seeing all the really fancy sounding titles around here, I’ve come to believe they try to make the jobs sound as important as they can as maybe a perk or something. Make no mistake, the people here work their tails off, I just think it’s funny how they are about titles.
And no, it doesn’t impact my responsiblities or pay (which is about 20% less than my last job, but I got laid off from there too, so, no complaints from me!)

Hmm, I really don’t know. I was never given one. I even asked. ::sigh::
My title is “Desktop Support Technician” but I am the Systems Administrator here. Last job I was the Systems Administrator and that didn’t affect the pay or anything else, just made me slightly happier.

“Rick, your companies computer guy” “He will fix your computer and then make fun of you”
I guess my official title is, “Network Administrator”. Although I think Systems Admin would be more correct. Though if you really want to get to the quick of it, my screen name sums it up the best, Office Lackey.

I’ve been called many names…no I’m not Dracula.
Systems Admin, Systems Engineer, IT Lead Engineer, Network Admin, etc.
Sys Admin sounds good to me.
Some people respect us some don’t.
My title is “Director of IT”, but I’m really in the same boat as Mike4003… I’m the ONLY IT person. It’s a cool title and I’m hoping it gets me a high paying job if I ever leave my current job. However, for now, it doesn’t get me anything other than “ooo” and “aah” from my lower “Desktop Support Technician” friends. Since I’m at a non-profit, I get paid only a fraction of what my job title would bring in the “real” world.
If you’re curious what the actual job title is for the work you do, RHI released a booklet a year or two ago with many of the IT job titles and their description. It, and some other useful information (such as the 2009 Technology Salary Guide), can be found here… Find Top IT Staff or Tech Jobs | Robert Half .

Robert Half is full of jerks.
IMHO
I just use them for their free stuff.
Once, many years ago, I signed up for them to find me a job. They failed.

Had to check what mone is , but mine is IT Systems Analyst .
I am one of two 2nd line guys, we look after your vmware servers, exchange, phones, networks and help our 1st line helpdesk guy out with desktop support.
We are lucky for a small company that there is some huge investment in IT , and we also have an IT Director and a DBA as well.

Officialy I am the CEO. Just because I am the the boss of our five man company. I like the sound of that name, but hate the consequenses.
If my techniciens can’t fix it, I will have to. So most of my customers call me ‘The Wizard’.
Hired as Network Administrator, but execute System Administrator and even IT Director functions most of the time.
What it does for me? I guess it makes me very proud of myself!
I’m in consulting. My official title is Senior Account Manager / Technician - my boss refers to us as his biatches. So internally that is biatch #2 - which basically means run around and catch everything, and also be the sales guy / account relations. Doesn’t get me crap. lol I get to roll all functions in as well, so I do director, admin, maintenance, etc.
Same title has My friend Homer, in fact a very similar job, office, buttons, DO NOT TOUCH. Doh! exchange server down must fix , must fix.

Even better - make up your own and put it on your card. Then it will be official. lol - make your self the Director of IT and then show up at the management meetings. See if anyone says anything.
Titles are all over the map, obviously.
I would suggest avoiding the word “technician” in favor of “engineer”. Instant credibility. As the owner of an IT firm we always refer to our technical staff as Network Engineers out of respect for them and to also reassure our clients that we are not “low-level technicians”.
In a way it’s a mind game but perception is reality.
