Lately I’ve been on a major Avenged Sevenfold kick due to Life is But a Dream. After The Rev died the band seemed to lose their creative spark and moved away from their genre bending to sound like a (talented) Metallica/Pantera/GnR cover band. They seem to be reinvigorated now with Brooks Wackerman back there though because LIBAD is freaking phenomenal. I did go back and listen to their older stuff and, while I still really do not like Nightmare or (especially) Hail to the King, I’ve got a newfound appreciation for their self-titled album (which I didn’t particularly care for when it came out, aside from A Little Piece of Heaven) and I think it’s neck and neck with Waking the Fallen and City of Evil as my favorite album of theirs, albeit for different reasons.

Otherwise I mostly listen to podcasts, YouTube/Rumble videos, or my gym playlist (which consists of stuff like Coheed & Cambria, Muse, Slipknot, Tool, AFI, The Sword, Black Sabbath, etc.). Sometimes I’ll use the Spotify DJ since it’ll bring up music I haven’t listened to in a long time or introduce me to new stuff I may have missed (lately it’s been on a jazz/fusion jazz kick which I’m really enjoying, just not when I’m lifting lol).

Depends on my mood but most of the time I’m playing the daily iteration of Grateful Dead of the Day from https://gratefuldeadoftheday.com/ other times when I’m amped up and doing some heavy stuff I’ll crank out SunO))) or Mastodon etc

A couple of weeks ago, it was Clutch’s back catalogue. Prior to that it was playlists of tunes I use for late night driving (shouty ones and ones that can be sung along to to keep you awake), data entry (drown out background noise) and event setup (1,400 track playlist of just about anything that can keep people going for a week). This week it has been one of YouTube’s mixes of mashups, mainly stuff by Bill McClintock, DJ Cummerbund, Wax Audio and Lobsterdust.

I’ve also been told by my friends to listen to more Electric Callboy, Sleep Token and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

Currently I’ve been on a Bring me the Horizon kick personally.

At work, I’m flipping between Sirius XM channels. Pop Rocks, Hits 1, and 80s/90s/2Ks Xtra channel (If my coworker is gone, I’ll put on Liquid metal or BPM)

EDM. As counter-intuitive as it is, it’s a great backdrop to help me focus. As long as it’s a fairly consistent beat/pattern it’s great. Not into too many vocals.

DJ Xexer is my favorite, his tunes and beat seem to work perfectly for me. Plus they’re like an hour long each.

I have to be the contrarian and say that I prefer silence while working. Music is too distracting while working because I end up focusing on the music itself – technique, structure, melody, harmony, rhythm, etc. Classical is even worse for me because I focus on the individual instrument sections!

While driving, however, that’s a different story. Music provides enough of a mental relief such that I can keep focus on the road while the rest of my brain remains engaged with the music. Without it, if I’m driving in silence, my mind drifts toward unwanted or uncomfortable regions in my brain. Past relationships, past negative work experiences, socio-political irritations, etc.

For that, it’s metal. European symphonic, melodic death, American thrash, virtuoso shredders, folk-inspired, etc.

At work, nothing, all you can hear are the fans and people typing on keyboards, unless a call comes in. If I’m driving I have a playlist that includes mostly country, some 1930’s Jazz, Sinatra, Beach Boys, couple of rock songs, most of the soundtrack to Hamilton, and some other stuff; it is always a work in progress.

I have always beena fan of 50’s music because of my grandmother. A new artist, Stephn Sanchez, has a kinda spinoff of 50’s love songs and it is to die for!!! I can’t wait for him to release his album in the fall.

For positive vibes I love a good Reggae mix. Some Slightly Stoopid, Rebelution, and Joe Samba should do the trick.

For more serious vibes I go with metal – Erra is a current favorite.

Oh, when it comes to music, I’m all over the place. If I’m needing to focus, I’ll put on some instrumental lo-fi music . If I’m making dinner, something funky and upbeat and my go to is usually Khruangbin . If it’s the weekend, I like to put on the party lights and listen to DJ Brian from on Twitch that plays the 80s.
