When is it necessary to run ADprep for the domain? I understand the forest prep should only be ran once when you are moving from 2003 to 2008 or to 2008r2, but should domain prep also be run only once per domain after the forest prep? or is it necessary to run it before every domain controller promotion? Also from what I’ve read if it’s a 2012r2 machine it will call ad prep if needed anyway.

Are you asking for general knowledge or are you planning an upgrade? If the latter, what version are you at and what version are you going to?

I’m going to promote a 2012r2 to a 2008r2 forest all the DCS in the domain are 2008r2 at this time.
