If you’re not familiar with the Spiceworks Community mascot, which happens to be a big orange Tyrannosaurus rex, let me give you a little history.

SpiceRex was discovered on March 27, 2010 by the original Pure Capsaicin, @akp982, as part of a contest where we asked SpiceHeads to show us their spiciness. We learned that akp982 discovered SpiceRex as a baby near Marlow, England (90 minutes west of London) and affectionately dubbed him “SpiceRex.” And from there, SpiceRex’s fame quickly grew.

Why is he important? SpiceRex is not just the Community mascot; he is a symbol for IT professionals everywhere, and his roar is a rallying cry! He embodies the daily struggles – and triumphs – of IT life. That feeling when you finally fix a network issue that’s been plaguing you for days? That’s SpiceRex roaring in victory alongside you. The frustration of explaining to someone, again, that turning it off and on again actually works? That’s SpiceRex’s fiery breath of (controlled) exasperation. In the immortal words of Vegeta, his power level “it’s over 9,000!” Much, much more. SpiceRex’s power level is easily in the millions as is our Community.

And when he’s not saving the world from zombies, on assignment in London, or blasting off into space, he’s working tirelessly (and fiercely) for all of you. And, as we all know, having the support of millions of IT pros is not something easily overlooked or ignored. He represents the collaborative spirit of the Spiceworks community, where IT pros from around the globe come to help each other and share their knowledge.

While you might see him most often around the Community platform, he is no stranger to spiceworld (I hear there is a story about riding a mechanical bull…) and has traveled and visited various Community members across the globe.

There is also a great series called dear-spicerex when you need to ask something anonymously. SpiceRex doesn’t judge. Submitting a Dear SpiceRex post is a great opportunity to get advice from the community about your IT-related concerns without connecting your story with your profile or current company.

If you’re reading this around March, make sure to check out the spicerex-birthday tag to see what is going on!
