A friend of mine forgot their login password on their home pc. (running Win7 Home premium)
I tried booting from the Windows CD already, into the CMD prompt, then entering net user administrator/active:yes. For some reason It doesn’t want to take it. I haven’t had to “hack” a home pc in years, so I’m out of ideas…does anyone on here know how to bypass the Win7 password screen, in Home premium?

Use the sticky keys technique to change the password:

or if you want written instruction:

Option1: If there is another Administrator Account you could reset or remove the other’s password that way.
Option2: Hiren’s CD > KonBoot
Option2.1: Hiren’s CD > Mini Windows XP
Here’s a quick video tutorial for Option2.1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsmORrkUHXw

Hello
The easiest way: OphCrack
Just burn this on a DVD, boot from DVD and bang you can see the password

Thanks for your fast replies. I’ll go over there in the next few days to try some of these out.

What?
Clearly you’re using the wrong tool. Don’t bother trying to recover the password. Use the Offline NT Password Editor (which, last I knew, was included in Hiren’s Boot CD) to blank the password. In and out in the time it takes to reboot twice.

Ophcrack was always hit or miss for me. It seemed to work great for Vista machines and then every now and again on Windows 7. Think I tried it once on Windows 8 and it was a no go. I’ve always just gone in with Hiren’s and Mini XP to change or remove a password.

Hirens boot should work
Takes forever though…

This does the job nicely.
I’ve used the method recommended by Donut Destroyer more than once.
Advantages:
- No downloading anything
- No burning any disks/creating bootable flash drives
- No concerns regarding the safety/security of third party downloads
Disadvantages:
- None that I can think of unless possibly it’s slightly less cool than downloading/using a new tool. (I don’t mean that cynically, because I’ve done that too with Trinity Rescue CD and it was kind of rewarding).

Hiren’s is definitely your best friend here, make a bootable USB or CD of it. You can also do a malware scan from it so it can scan system files that normally never get scanned because it’s booted to the OS.

Another vote for Ophcrack. Its simple to use and quick.
